Unidentified Vitage Rolex
Hi, new here and need a little help identifying the type of Rolex I have.
I have an old Rolex, pictures for which are on line and I can post the links if you like. After trawling the internet for 2 days to find out more about it, I found similar but nothing that matches. It is a ‘cushion’ or ‘bubble’ back. 9k gold. I think it is 1930s style with Arabic numbers and a separate second hand and dial. The mechanism says it has 15 jewels, but I believe one is missing, so it is fully wound but doesn't work. I have found plenty of a similar style but what seems different with this watch is the face. There is an inlaid silver strip between the minute marks and the numbers. Also the model number inside the back isn't on any list I have found on the web. 1422 If you think you can help I would be very grateful. |

I have sent links to pictures but apparently a moderator needs to check them out first?

I thought it would be better to post links to pictures rather than taking up the forum server space.
Is it better to attach the pictures to a post? Does it normally take this long to for a moderator to approve? |

It is a 1930's cushion oyster, Glasgow hallmark. The 4 digit number appears to be the model number rather than the serial number but I can't find that particular Model No. There may possibly be an additional hallmark on the top lug (Note that these are solid rather than wire lugs). I can reference two which are very similar (book refs vice internet). The first dial contains the silver inlay you speak about (3 tone metal finished dial) so thats a positive, but bears a seconds sweep hand vice sub-register as well as 'ROLEX OYSTER' rather than just 'ROLEX', the movement is also slightly different but appears to be the same base - Oyster super balance signed movement (possibly due to the sweep?). The hour and minute hand appear correct. The serial number may have been on the outside of the caseback (There are quite a few in this era like this) and been lost to polishing? There are also many which bear the same movement and dial minus the silver inlay. Based on all the above the best I can date it to is 1939. Hope it helps. Good Luck.

Thanks Scunner.
From what you say, it sounds like its a bit unusual. I've heard of manual oysters, seen pics of them, but it was the silver strip that fooled me. Also the fact it doesnt say Oyster! I'm glad it is though. They seem to be very popular with collectors in the USA! Thanks again. |

These are referred to as "non-Oyster" in Imai. Cushioned, pillow-shaped , 9K. 1930s.
The back is non-Oyster. |
