So last week I purchased a NIB SD and this just really put me over the edge wanting my Sub back as well so today I purchased a LNIB Sub 16610.

Have I lost my mind here? Anyone else missing the tinny clasp and hollow link bracelet There is just something about the prior generation that makes me feel they will last a lifetime trouble free and I am not so sure I feel this way about the ceramics... Thoughts/Opinions TRF, Have I lost my mind

Here is a pic of my SD, will post one of the Sub when she comes

You have lost more from your wallet than you have from your mind. It does seem that you may be somewhat fickle about what you want in a watch and therefore are frequently trying to satisfy yourself. If that's all the problems you have, you are leading a wonderful life.

Actually no, its not about flipping its about flipping right. If you buy right you will never lose $$$ or very little... This is the case for pretty much any SS sports model Rolex. Sure I have had some gold and TT and then you can lose but its not bad.

I look at it this way. I work hard, everything else is taken care of (house/wife/family/sons college...), I dont drink/gamble or anything of the like, I make a good living and have the $$$ and enjoy having new and different watches Life is short, enjoy each and every day you have

It's kind of nice to have a bit of the vintage, a bit of the old, and a bit of the newer versions. There is something special about all of them.

I hear your message loud and clear. And I also feel the same way; there is something really beautiful about wearing the latest, greatest that technology has to offer. Love to strap on the DSSD...

And there is something really beautiful about wearing the coolest of all classics, a great ol Rolex watch. Love to strap on the SD 4000....

Why not enjoy them both (all)?

It happens to many..

Congrats on the SD & Sub!
I am still stuck on the newer models but could never rule out "going back".
Enjoy those beauties!

Hi Adam,

nothing wrong with that, exactly the same thing happened to me.

I really tried hard to love the new 6 digits line of Rolex, but I cannot. Of course, the watches are technically perfect, and they have some nice improvements over the old ones.

But the design doesn't sing to me. It is not only the wider lugs, that's ok for a sports watch. They made the lugs wider to make the watch look bigger. But at the same time, the ceramic bezel is a little bit wider, and together with the maxi dots on the dial it makes the dial itself actually look smaller!

This is IMO a kind of disharmony which I cannot get used to. The whole impression of these watches to me is that they look like pancakes (nothing against pancakes, I like them very much). For this reason, I never liked the GMT IIC, and I have never been tempted to buy one.

The design of the 5 digit models is simple and harmonic. It has grown over many many years. It cannot be improved; the lines and proportions are just perfect!

It is my true believe that Rolex made a mistake here. Why the hell did they change the lines and proportions of a perfect design? That's plain stupidity.

Of course, there is still this trend to bigger watches, so why not introduce 2 sizes for the Subs, one 40mm and one 43mm? But for god's sake keep the original lines and proportions! Then add new bracelet, clasp, ceramic and maxi dial (which had its history in the past)>>>>>Wow, perfect!

But they missed it.....

Just my opinion, and I own the 116610LN & LV, but seriously thinking of letting them go....

Thanks for reading

Tom

love the SD! Congratulations

After wearing both the old bracelet and the newer solid link bracelets on Daytona/milgauss....etc. I have to admit that the ever so sligthly more flexible bracelet of the older bracelets feel more comfortable then the more rigid solid linked ones.

Excellent analysis. I tend to think of my watch hobby the same way. I don't have any vices (except maybe cigars) and do well enough to play a bit with my wrist wear. The losses are not all that much...in fact, I've made money on many of my flips.

You've not lost your mind, you've come to your senses. Rolex have now defaced all of the sports models, IMO.

I just don't get the constant flipping and buying watches you previously owned.

Just me!

Adam,

I can't argue with your logic because it is spot on. And, I guess if I could afford to do the same, I just might as I do crave a couple other Rolexes. If I could, I'd get a ceramic LV and an 18 KT YG IIC green dial and probably in that order. I think that would pretty much take care of my cravings for awhile.

Old style is the way to go, IMO. I've got no love for the fat lugs on the new Sub-C, GMT-IIC.

The newer models are fine looking watches. It's just that the older ones look better in every way to my eye.

Without doubt the bigger hands and larger indices would be a practical advantage when you are in your forties but I'd still go for the older style because they look better.

I think they are meant to be an advantage at forty fathoms
