I like my Speedmaster way more than I liked the Daytona. The Daytona made it for 48 hours with me. Just could not bond with it and having to unscrew the pushers to use the chrono drove me bonkers.

I have an "obsession" with the non maxi GMTs, it's quite understandable. It's just there are a good few I want before I shell out for a Daytona.

Likes and dislikes are subjective, and imo it's rude and disrespectful to relentlessly criticize the choices of others. There are Rolexes that I love, and Rolexes that I very much don't love and would never own, but I feel no compulsion to jump into each and every thread about these models and bag on them. People like them and enjoy wearing them, and if certain models have more demand than others, what's the big deal? Honestly, in some cases it seems like sour grapes. People should simply learn to respect others' likes and personal choices, understand that people who own these watches get a great deal of joy out of owning and wearing them just as they get a get a great deal of joy out of owning and wearing whichever model it is that *they* chose to wear, and leave it at that.

clearly the branding evokes the same sentiment, i am sure all would agree with you. Maybe we should put up a pole on this one, i suppose it would be really close ...

LOVE IT! Don't you think the hubcaps have a Sub look to them? Could be some photoshop ahead!

Back to the original question...
Why the obsession with the Daytona--
Finally have some decent photos of my 2000 A Serial Zenith Daytona that answers the question for me. This was the watch that drew me to Rolex and is still my daily wearer. I just love looking at it on my wrist. |

Because it's one hell of a watch and quite possibly the best chrono movement out there! But then again I'm biased.

I needed a chrono so after looking around I went for the Breitling Superocean. Greater depth rating than Sub, rotating bezel to track two different elapsed times, day and date, great lume, $3300. It keeps time as well as any of my three Rolexes. I love my Sub, my GMT IIc, and my DJ but the Daytona with no date and a bezel I wouldn't use just doesn't do it for me. To each his own!

Just think if this tread was about the Sub. Are you ready for hate.
The Daytona lovers have been very calm. |

Love to tease Bub owners. I've got a Sea Dweller and a Daytona but I am looking into a Sub. I just can't decide which color. I don't want black on black - have that with the SD. I"m thinking about where I'd wear it.

I've had two and IMHO, a Daytona is like a wrench in my tool chest - built for a purpose. I use mine for its intended purpose and love it. When I flew coast-to-coast regularly on business, the Explorer II's timezone hand was useful. When I dove, the Sub was a primary tool.
Watches - even Rolex watches - are tools to me. Beautiful, elegant and worthy of praise but to each task there is a certain tool that excels in its use. If you aren't into endurance sports where time = knowledge, then the Daytona may not be your favorite. If you aren't waking up in the middle of the night wondering what time it is here or there, then an Explorer or GMT may not be your favorite. If you aren't concerned with how many minutes to decompress at 33' and then 10', then a Sub may not be your favorite. BTW, why can't we get a depth gauge on that thing? ;-) So, to each his/her own.

I prefer speedy pro to daytona, simply because of speedy's vintage-looking time. The reason why I adore vintage daytona 6263

Love both my Daytona's. Date is not an issue as if I need it, have the iphone for it. Since I have others with a date, I don't sweat it! It is a gorgeous watch and unique in the rolex line because it can fly under the Radar. The general public don't know that it is a Rolex since it doen't have the date magnifier. That is why I like it. You don't see them out much in the wild. Vegas is the only place I have seen it with regularity.

Beautiful watch, no doubt about it...it was one of the finalists when I ended up getting the GMT a few weeks back, is still on the short list.

and an undeniably argument for the speedy! speedy is so much cleaner, legible & usable but aside from that the daytona is hot.
