What if the name Submariner was taken???
As many of you know Rolex was either unsure of or unable to use the Submariner name, as it did not appear on all subsequent models during its release.
In 1954 Rolex registered a number of other model names including: Frogman Skin Diver Dive-O-Graph Deep Sea Diver The Submariner name was not finally registered to Rolex until the 1960's. The Legendary name is official This information pulled from the Vintage Rolex Sports Models book by Skeet and Urul. Just for fun what would be your choice if Submariner was not an option. I am biased because of my user name but I love the idea of The Rolex Frogman If you choose other, suggest a name. Have fun with it. |

I think I would have liked "Diver" but skin-diver would have been alright especially with the sexual connotation.

Now old Hans Wilsdorf was a clever man,and wanted to increase sales worldwide and especially in tropical climates. So he tried to make a watch that was waterproof, now the evolution of the oyster case was started. His idea first was very simple one,he would fit a case inside a case, and he called it the Submarine. Now this worked, but had certain drawbacks you had to open the case to wind it,and the outer case had a threaded screw on bezel to protect the watch. Now this was not very user owner friendly and caused wear on the hinges and bezel threads. So he started to look for a new idea for a very waterproof wrist watch. So in 1925 he heard that two watchmakers one was Paul Perregaux other George Perrolet they had taken out a swiss patent for a twin lock screwed stem system crown. Now Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex grasped that a hermetically sealed case, together with careful fitting of the crystal and a special stem mechanism, would produce a better water proof wristwatch. He quickly negotiated to have the Perregaux patent assigned to him. Wilsdorf later then obtained a British patent on October 18 1926.And then soon after the Rolex Oyster was born and became a commercial success.. In 1927, a stenographer, Mercedes Gleitze, swam the English Channel with the unheard of accompaniment of a wristwatch –the Rolex Oyster— on her person for the entire 15 hour, 15 minute, swim and the rest is Rolex history, and we had to wait 30 odd years for the rebirth, from Submarine, to Submariner. First Rolex Submarine. Paul Perregaux patent screwed stem system 1925,which Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex acquired,to make the first oyster cased Rolex.

I'd prefer no model name at on all the dial, what they call it on the price list/catalogs I wouldn't care about. :-)

Hi Everyone,
I voted for, Frogman. I just like that name; no other reason! Till next time... The Laird

In true 1950s style, it should have been called the Turbo Hydra-Matic De-luxe. And featured inch-high fins on the lugs.

I just heard "Submaster" (what folks call a Sub that has a pepsi GMT bezel insert) and really like that!
