It physically and visually emphasizes the zero hour of an additional time zone for easy reference day or night. Plus it adds another aesthetic element to the watch. Glorious.

I don't want to take the ugliest, most easily discolored/damaged part of the sub and put it on my GMT. One of the reasons I like the watch is the absence of this feature.

Good point, however I don't agree with the 'ugliest' part. I don't think there is any single thing that is ugly on a sub.

I'm not fond of it, but what I specifically meant is that it's the part that seems to tend to become ugly/unsightly due to the aforementioned discoloration/damage issues.
