This was surprising, but helps to explain why the PAM is so comfortable. I really like large watches, just not ones as tall & heavy as the DSSD. If the DSSD is your cup of tea, more power to you.
No hackles were raised. Simply pointing out the fact that many here seems to think a Rolex is the end all be all of all watches. God forbid if Rolex stepped out of that box. I applaud Rolex for going out of their way to make a bold change. We're talking about luxury watches here, practicality isn't on the list when we're plunking down $8k for a piece of metal on our wrists. One can argue that a watch isn't very practical or comfortable at all given that most people have cell phones these days. Revolution/evolution is good for any brand.

I tired on a Deep Sea yesterday and it was WAY too big for me. I put it back in the case after about 30 seconds. They sure are pretty but not for my 5'11 frame.

Having owned both the SD and the DSSD at the same time, I got to wear both a lot for a year before I sold the DSSD. I really liked the DSSD but it was just too thick for everyday wear for me (hard to fit under dress shirts). However, I do miss it. The curve of the crystal and the glidelock were my favorite features. Being able to change the length of the bracelet that easily was fantastic. And the curved crystal was a joy to look at. However, one had to go and I just had a deeper level of attachment for the smaller SD. It's big enough on my 7" wrist. Though today my wife stated that she likes big watches on guys so she thinks I need to go back to the DSSD or my old PAM 312. Hmmm....is that permission??

Now, if Rolex just made a 42mm Sea Dweller with a glidelock and was about 2/3 of the thickness of the the DSSD, a curved crystal, a depth rating of let's call it 6000 ft., I might mortgage the house for that one. And no massively tapering bracelet either. And while I am dreaming just make it cost less than the current Sub ;).

I don't think I did...my point is that many things purchased are never used for what they were originally designed.

Both vehicles above were originally designed as military vehicles, now that they cost close to 90 G's and over 100+ Gs depending on options, who in there right mind would take it off road. A more recent example would be the H1 Hummer. Most I see have 21" chrome wheels, etc...

To paraphrase your words they too have, evolved beyond their intended use or practical usefulness, BUT people still buy them nonetheless. Many products are that way, especially in the automotive or motorcycle world.

I'm not sure where I missed your point.

It sounds more like it's just "too tall and heavy" FOR YOU (that's assuming you've tried on the watch for any length of time) and somehow dissing the watch and it's design is your way of justifying it.

I as well as many other owners don't find it too tall or heavy at all.

Bottom line is if it's depth rating was 300m, I would have still bought it. I didn't buy it for it's depth rating, I bought it because I liked a dive watch that was @ 44mm that was also Rolex.

In the end enjoy your watches.

We all buy our watches for our own reasons and no one persons reasons are better than another.

14060 is classic

can't go wrong with it. Unless you want something considerably thicker ...

Myself, I am not a big guy but love my 44mm and 47 mm Panerais so the DSSD fits right in. A side wrist shot just for you to see how thick/high it is :

I have the SD DSSD sub ND and a 16610(LV). They are all great watches that I enjoy for different reasons (they have all been to the bottom of the ocean albeit at pressures that my dj can withstand). I don't really understand why the dssd gets some so bent out of shape. If you don't like it, don't wear it. This whole tool watch analogy is getting tired as well. They only real tool watch is a g shock (or something similar) not a $5k plus luxury item.
