116234 Steel/WG Datejust or 16610 Submariner?
I don't yet own a Rolex but am torn between the 16610 Submariner and 116234 Datejust (SS/WG/Stick). I like the rugged good looks of the Sub but the understated, classic style of the Datejust.
Other than the underwater rating of the Sub and the numbered bezel, what are the differences between these watches? Is the Datejust water resistant? Does the crown screw down on both? Lug-to-lug distances the same? Significant difference in weight or comfort? Will the DJ show scratches more and not age as well as the Sub? Finally, would you agree that the DJ is lower key in style, less likely to stand out and get noticed by the non-watch crowd? Odd question, I know ... Thanks! John |

The lug width is the same. Scratches would show less on the Sub since everything is brushed on the Sub. Movement would be the same, so everything else is pretty much styling and looks. Just depends upon your preference in regards to what you like the most.

Are you looking at the older Sub 16610 or the newer SubC/116610?
The Datejust is a more elegant/dressy piece, without being a pure dress watch per se. The case size is a more moderate 36mm, which is quite refreshing these days IMO. The watch wears/appears to be a bit larger because of the all metal bracelet. There are two bracelets to chose from; either Jubilee or Oyster. Both have polished center links (PLC), but the Jubilee has a hidden clasp which doesn't shows scratches/wear as easily. The Datejust is waterproof to 100m/300ft, so it has a screwdown crown (not tripple like the Submariner). It will handle pretty much anything you could every throw at it and it just fine for swimming and snorkeling. Both are timeless classics. If you wear a suit a lot, a DJ might be preferable. Unless you are a very sporty guy, a DJ might be all that you need. Great classic buy IMO. |
