Self Winder not working properly
Dear Friends:
I am new to this site as well as a new rolex owner. About 6 months ago my wife bought me an oyster perp datejust. About 2 months ago I noticed that I would put the watch on in the morning and it would be frozen. After a few shakes of course it would start up again. I wear my watch everyday so I would think that it would wind automatically ans shouldnt have to wind it manually. However, I often do. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there something wrong with my watch? Or is this normal? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks |

This is not normal. Wearing the watch all day should provide enough reserve to power the watch overnite and it should be running when you get up. Take the watch to your AD for a checkup. Good Luck.

1. Next time the watch stops, give if a few swirls like you're moving wine in a glass to get the movement running again. We call this the "JJ Brandy Swirl"...LONG story.
2. Once you do this go ahead and give the watch a full forty manual winds. Don't worry about over-winding as the movement is equipped with an internal clutch that prevents this from happening. 3. Now set the watch and wear it as normal. If you take the watch off tonight and tomorrow morning it's stopped, take it back to the AD you bought it at...your watch probably needs a minor service. Otherwise, this should solve your problem and it should run properly. Keep in mind that your DJ has a reserve of about 44 hours (usually a little less), so if you haven't worn it in that much time, expect it to need a wind when you put it back on. Welcome to TRF!!

You're welcome! Back up and running again, or did you need to take it to your AD?

Great advice there! I would just like to ask how many hours you are sleeping / the watch rests on the bedside table? Because I have noticed with another Rolex I had once that it kinda started losing time and finally "froze", as you say, because when I studied I tended to sleep like ten hours a night, and then study all day. I was wearing the watch the rest of the day, while studying, but consider the fact that studying is not a very active life style. So if you work in an office and sleep like 8-9 hours every night, then - over some months - your Rolex will lose more and more of its full power reserve and finally stop since it simply gets not action enough. So no offense: I think you might need to move more / more your wrist more during the day.
