Need advice about scratched dial
Hi. I need a little advice about my new (to me) DateJust that I mentioned in another thread. I purchased this watch from a seemingly reputable dealer with a return policy, so your advice would help me a lot.
Essentially, I'm happy with my A-serial SS DJ, and it runs about +2-3 seconds per day, but I have one issue with it in that it has a small scratch on the dial to the right of the "Officially Certified" lettering. The seller stated that this watch was in "great" condition, and the pics of the watch that they showed me before purchase clearly didn't have the scratch. I'm wondering if they actually scratched it when they cleaned it up before sending it to me. I initially thought the scratch was maybe just a bit of left over polish, and the seller advised me to take it to a watch repair place to get it cleaned, but the watch repair guy says it's a scratch that can only be removed if he refinishes the whole dial. So, now that I know I'm stuck with the scratch, is this going to majorly affect the value of the watch in the future, and should I ask for some money back from the seller? If so, how much? Or should I return the watch? Or should I just try to get over it and live with it? I certainly expected tiny scratches on the case and band, but it's a bit disarming on the dial itself. It's tough to photograph this little scratch, but you can see it just a little bit in the pic I posted on the other thread. It is more noticeable in person. Thanks for the advice! |

You could also negotiate some $ toward a replacement crystal if you like the watch enough.

Go back to the dealer you bought the watch from & see what he can do for you. If he is reputable he'll try & make it right if in fact the scratch wasn't there before. Take better pics & show him that when he advertised the watch the scratch wasn't there.Maybe he'll refund a few bucks or you just might have to learn to live with it.

Return the watch no questions asked and find a new seller. IMHO it is dishonest to not disclose such a thing. Sorry to hear of your troubles but this would drive me crazy too and Yes, it will have an impact on the future resale.

Even with the scratch, the watch is in "great" condition. The scratch can't be removed. Try to work something out with the seller. Whenever I consider buying not NIB, I always ask if there are any dings, scratches, blemishes that may not show up in pics. If they say yes, get more details, or no, and the item is not as exactly described, then you have recourse. Always ask plenty of questions whenever buying something used over the net.

Thanks for the help, everyone. What kind of dollar amount seems fair to you if I ask for some money back?

Hmmm... I would call and see what his response/offer is. If he/she acts stupid, I'd take the entire watch back.
Are you sure it's not something stuck underneath the crystal or it's something on the dial not actually being scratched? |

If it truly is a scratch on the dial this would be my advise as well. I would not accept a dial repair or money back unless the amount would pay for a new dial.

How about cost of a new crystal and the cost of installation?

I would say take it a real Authorized Dealer, get an estimate of the replacement cost (should be around $300 - $500) and go with that estimate to the person who sold you the watch. Ask either for them to pay for the fix, or for your money back.

If its a scratch on the crystal, should be able get one from RSC for about $125. Hopefully you can negotiate that much back. If the scratch is on the dial its a much larger issue..I think a replacement dial runs over $700 so you'll definitely wan't to see if you can get a refund.

A replacement dial for that watch shouldn't be too much. Since it's an older watch has it had a recent service? If it hasnt been serviced you should've factored $500-$800 in for a service. A new dial would be installed them. I would ask for a new dial if you really like the watch. This is why I always buy at ADs.

The scratch is definitely on the dial, not the crystal, unfortunately.

Your watch case and band will eventually get beat to sh-t. However the Dial should look as if it spent its whole life like David the bubble boy. Im already annoyed with the scratch and its not even my watch. Makes me think that who ever worked on your watch had no business touching it in the first place. Return it immediately or if you got to good of deal to be true send it off to RSC and they will rebuild it from the ground up. Dont live with it though. You did not buy a used Seiko.

Well, the seller has agreed to return the watch. Such a bummer, because this is the exact model/bezel/dial/band that I've been looking for. If anyone sees a similar watch to buy, feel free to let me know. Thanks!
