Icon4 Hurricane Dean...Mexico

Well my friends, as I am sitting alone @ office, making last arrangements to receive Dean (now expected to hit us as Cat 5 ), we will disconnect our server and therefore internet access. This will be a LONG week; landfall should be early Tuesday morning.

For anyone interested, our good friend Brendan emailed me yesterday from COZUMEL! He is there on honeymoon, I do not know what his plans are; hope he is safe....

Will be here for another couple of hours or so, then a 'stress management' session; today is a beautiful day, sun is bright, calm seas; my nerves are NOT. So time for a BIG cigar (Romeo y Juleta Particulares lmtd edition) and Chivas (21 yr)....just to enjoy it; we will not have power, water (nor ice) for 5-10 days after Dean hits.....

Talk to you later. Have a great wekend.

Good luck, and be safe!

We have friends who are supposed to be at the Omni from the 31st to the 4th. Wonder if they'll still make it...?

Godspeed...

Gerardo, we are all thinking of you and praying that everyone will be safe. I have been watching the news in disbelief.

Take care as best you can and please check in when you can (you'll have other priorities no doubt) to let us know you and your family are OK. Hang in there friend.

The waiting is a blessing and a curse. You have time to prepare but the anxiety is brutal.

Why not just board up, secure your belongings and get on a plane somewhere to return when power, etc., is restored?

I can sympathize. I wish you the best.

Yes, it is BRUTAL! I carry a pack of Tums with me, and you can feel stress all over.

On your advice, tried it 3 days ago; there is not even one seat available on ANY flight going anywhere! Today's report is that we have 98,000 tourists trying to get out. When I tell you about tequila, I am not kidding, by this moment my back hurts, you start to get cranky (as you can tell by me writing so much) and headaches come and go. A shot of tequila eases tension a bit.

Seeing a straight line projection like the one shown is very unusual..

Those things almost always spin off to the north before they pass Cuba.

Hope things turn out well..

To be honest, I do think we are better prepared this time; power lines are underground (after Wilma), hotels are 'beefier' and we have the recent experience. After all, this is a beautiful place, you should not change your plans (plus December is after hurricane season). What I would suggest is to take advantage of this, hotels will be looking for business so rates are very likely to go down; you can get a pretty good deal!

Afetr Emily (which had the same track, speed, etc as Dean), we were back in 1-1/2 weeks and fully restored in 2-1/2 weeks.

It's surreal Gerardo.

A slow "calm" countdown to one heck of a torrid time to come.

I hope you remain safe and sound. Batten down those hatches.

We're pulling for you, G. It sounds like you've taken all the precautions, so take it easy on the "self-medication."

Thank you all for your comments. Yes, it looks like it will hit Chetumal, which is south of Cancun, but as with all hurricanes, you have to watch out; they have no word of honor. Today is the worst part: the wait. Currently @ home; sun shines and sea is VERY calm....just waiting...and waiting....

BTW, got an e-mail from Brendan (who was vacationing @ Cozumel), he foudn a plane out for 1:00 am so he was going to take it.

Saludos to all of you!

G - it APPEARS the eye is going to miss you!

Still, it's going to be a strong one, so stay safe - hopefully, it'll get by you without too much damage.

Best of luck with the hurricane watch, Gerardo. Hope everything works out OK and that you're back on line soon.

Just read a news story, not much mention of Cancun at all. Gerardo, I guess you've been spared. Thank God! Give us an update when you can!

"Tourist resorts like Playa del Carmen and Cancun, devastated by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, appeared to have escaped major damage."

Yes, it was a long night, winds here (I am south of Cancun) are pretty strong. Biggest problem for us @ home was that waves hitting the beach were over 18ft high; so water is everywhere! You should see our pool and yard...almost gone. I took some video, will post when I have time (some days...)

I heard on the news that some of the hardest hit areas (so far) were about 100 miles south of Cancun!

Be safe, Gerardo.

Just saw this post Gerardo! Have been wondering about you all...so glad you're all right.

Good you still have power. I bet there's a lot to clean up but it indeed could have been worse. Hang in there

Thank you. We are still cleaning, those 20 ft waves made a LOT of damage but nothing to worry about. Still cleaning...
