1988 DATEJUST Ratchet Wheel

Excellent web site for Rolex information!
My 1988 Datejust stopped working and I took it to Rolex Repair Shop. He is authorized to get genuine Rolex parts. He said it needed a service.
Anyway he cleaned, oiled, and adjusted watch. He replaced the crystal, crown, tube, and a ratchet gear. He gave me the old parts. The ratchet wheel was missing about 3 teeth. He also cleaned and polished watch. It looks new and is working well. Cost $850.
Question: Is it unusual for the ratchet wheel to lose teeth? Any thoughts on what could cause that?
thanks in advance

When your auto winder gets so gunked up the gears can't take the tork and teeth break or the bridge screws losened up and gears became misaligned there are many reasons why, If I looked at it I could give you a blow by blow account how it came to be in that state before the repair as I'm sure your watchmaker could as well. Thank you for your input Rikki. That makes sense. My watchmaker mentioned that some of the screws (in the watch) were lose. He said it's not uncommon for the ratchet wheel to lose teeth.

The watch has fared better than I over the last 23 years.
