Loving the unloved

For those of you who own some of the more controversal models, do you ever find the fact that they are not popular a source of confirmation that you chose the right watch? For example... I have a DJ II black stick dial. While there are some on this forum who like the DJII there are many who are quick to rattle off their complaints about it (crown too small, too much bling, bezel too big, etc.). In an odd way, the criticism just reinforces to me that I made the right choice. When I look at my watch, I see a beautiful design without the perceived flaws others see. In some ways it lets me know that I chose the right watch for me and was not swayed by the tastes of others.

Does anyone else have a similar experience?

You made the right choice because you bought waht you like not what others like. I did the same thing knowing how much every one else here loves the Sub and other sport models.

If we all had the same taste, life would be extremely boring.....
Variety and personal taste is the spice of life!!!
Enjoy what makes you happy, and forget the negatives of others as there's always someone, somewhere, who'll disagree.
Life is to short to hang up on the negatives!

What a cool title, "loving the unloved". When you spend as much time as we do thinking about watches we tend to see more then the casual watch folk.

If you like/love it that is all that matters. Who cares what others think/feel. I don't!!

Yes, I totally get this.

When I bought my first, I knew very little about Rolex, but did know I really liked the Milgauss. I bought it without influence from others.

A recent TRF poll on 'disliked models' ranked the Milgauss as second least liked. For some odd reason it made me that much happier with my decision.

No matter which one you buy, someone out there wouldn't like it. Either the model itself, the fact that it is the new or old design, Yada Yada Yada Yada.

Thats why they have a number of different styles in the first place. Not everyone likes the exact same thing anyway.

I bought it for me and the fact that I like it is the only thing that really matters.

There is a watch out there for everyone and style and taste is subjective to one's own eyes!
So- enjoy what you wear and share the love...

Too many people care what others think. I think that's a reason for the amount of 'flipping' that goes on.

Sell your DJ and buy a SubC. Then you'll be popular.

That's my point. I know I picked the right one because I love it despite the fair amount of opinions to the contrary.

F**k that! Who wants to be popular? I have thought about flipping my TOG plenty of times, however, came to my senses and said who cares if many folks behoove the TOG because to me that is an exquisite timepiece! By the way Ben I know your comment was a joke! Haha

Long ago I just resigned myself to accepting the fact these online forums are mostly made up of 7.5"+ wristed people who just love the sport models and often complain about how tiny the 36mm models are and how they're only for women with thin wrists, and only 3rd world children would or could wear the 34mm models.

Sure, I'm exagerating to a degree, but not by much. I've looked at numerous threads where people like myself with 6.5" wrists beg to find acceptance with the 40+mm models and when they show their pictures, it looks as though the lugs are overhanging the wrist by a noticable amount or the watch spins around like a loose bracelet.

Often a poster proud of their Datejust or Date or AirKing or mid Yachtmaster gets a cursory 'attaboy' and the thread dies, but get someone posting about the hopes and prayers of a 45mm Sub and the thread takes off and goes on for days.

It's just the way of the watch forums.

Sometimes its better to just avoiding reading opinions on the forum..it can sway your decisions because what others think...
I have read so many threads about the bad proportions of the dj II that i began to wonder myself. But every time i put mine on Im totally happy with it and dont see the proportions problem. Easy said...dont read too much!!!

Really good thread! Cuts through all of the "My opinion is right because the majority of people agree" crap.

Made me really happy I chose what I did when reading.

Thanks!

I get your point, but for me the solution isn't avoiding opinions on the forums (I enjoy TRF too much). Rather just don't put too much stock in others' opinions - your own opinion is all that really matters.

Maybe my watches are loved and respected among WIS, but my wife pretty much hates all of them -- except for the Speedmaster Pro which I got from her as a xmas present. But that just reassures me to buy watches for myself, and not to impress others.

BTW, there will always be "hot" watches and less popular watches. But being less popular on the market doesn't mean a watch has any flaws or is bad in general. The DJ II and Milgauss (just to mention 2 less popular Rolex models) are both great watches. Or how about JLC watches? They are not nearly as popular in most countries as AP, Patek or VC, but that doesn't mean they not great

I believe that the Datejust has been Rolex's #1 seller by volume, not any of the Sports Models.

And really we are all here on the forum for 1 reason... We love Rolex no matter the style!!!

I think you can read what the forum thinks, but just don't put too much stock in it. I was counseled by several people NOT to have my 5513 relumed because it would ruin the value. I sent it off for a relume anyways because it was what I wanted.

I got the watch back from the relume and I couldn't be happier. I wear it constantly, and don't really care a hill of beans about the resale value. I love it.

Just be yourself and buy what you want and wear what you want whenever you want. That's what I do. The DJ2 is a great watch by the way, even with all the %$^#()& about it's crown or its bezel. Same for the Milgauss.

I also agree with Cedargrove.....nice to listen and learn from others but don't put too much stock in others' opinions.....it's your own opinion that matters most. Peace!
