When is an OysterQuartz......
.....NOT an OysterQuartz?
When its a 1630. At first glance it looks like a 17013 OysterQuartz, but there's something a bit different about it.... the bracelet has 3 rows of gold links instead of the 2 rows on the 17013. And the second hand doesn't tick, it sweeps. Hmmm... lets look a bit closer. Well I'll be darned, its a 1630 Datejust, which first used the integrated case/bracelet that eventually found its way into the OysterQuartz series, but powered by the automatic 1575 movement. Also, the first Datejust model to be equipped with a synthetic sapphire crystal. Here are a few pix courtesy of Bob Ridley while he was going through it for me after I received it from our own Stuart (arttay 10). What we started with: Disassembly, clean-up, and replacement of a few bits. The red powder that used to be a jewel suggests that it was due for a service The bracelet needed a bit of attention Some clean-up on the case You want bevels? we got bevels! I'm pleased with the way it turned out

If I remember when Rolex first wanted to get there own Oysterquartz movement out in the market they did issue a few in the standard oyster type case. And they are rare as hens teeth these are not the same as when they used the beta quartz movement.

Bob Ridley is the man! His work is exceptional. There is a post here on TRF where he laser welded a GMT to repair a huge deep gouge. Amazing. If you have a vintage don't even consider sending it to anyone else.

Yep, he is. He also turned this:
into this for me: The only verified 1908 Wilsdorf & Davis still in existence, in restored and running condition.

Hi Al, Nice to see it all put back together. Last time I saw this watch (many many months ago) it was in parts on his work bench. You just get it back?

That's right, I'd forgotten you were there and saw it in bits! I've had it back for quite a while now. Took about 6 months all in, but I'd told Bob I wasn't in any hurry for it. Looks better now than the last time you saw it, huh?
