SeaDweller /Sub (non-Date)
Hello there,
After a couple of years deliberating, and having a Breitling, which I had numerous problems with - not to mention the store that sold a faulty watch to me, I am now 110% in the market for a Rolex. Specifically a non date sub or a sea dweller. Am I right in saying that the SD is now only available in the DeepSea version? Id love that, but its out of my price range. Therefore I am looking for the Sub non date. Can anyone recommend a decent AD in the NJ/NY area that may carry the model I am looking for, please? Also if anyone could suggest a price I should aim for/be porepared to pay. Is cash still 'king', so to speak? Is it acceptable to enter an AD and ask for a discount? Any advice offered would be greatly appreciated. I owned a GMT II about ten years ago and sadly had to sell it...oh how i regret that decision!! Many thanks Rich |

You can still find nice Sea Dwellers on the second hand market, including the trusted sellers here on TRF where I purchased mine. You can acquire a nice one for around 5K. IMHO it's still one of the greatest watches EVER. As you know, the "Dweller" is a bit thicker than the Sub and it's got the helium escape valve. And, of course, it's much more rare
Also own the Deep Sea; it's really cool but the original is cooler. Good luck with your shopping! |

Have you tried either one on the SD is thick and top heavy in my opinion and will cost at least $5,000.
On the other hand, a 14060M is lighter, thinner and a great all around watch that could be had for around $4,000, less if you shop hard and don't mind something a tad older |

i had the same exact problem recently in choosing between the no-date sub and the SD.
i chose the SEA-DWELLER. has the same case diameter as a no-date sub, but more presence since it's thicker. i wear it daily and it's comfortable, never an issue even with a suit. tightly cuffed sweaters are a different matter, but no big deal. got mine here on TRF from DAVIDSW, an outstanding dealer. it'll be rare to find one brand new still with stickers on it. they're usually priced around 5k-6k and up depending on condition and serial, of course. you'll probably save a few bucks buying from a TRUSTED seller on TRF, but if you feel more comfortable with an AD, then go for it if you can find one. don't be afraid to haggle. good luck. |

Sea Dweller. 14060 is nice, have had a couple, but Sea Dweller is the daddy. If you have had a big heavy Breitling, I don't think the weight/height will be an issue for you.

Really appreciate your opinions guys. I have been in touch with an AD or two in NY and they have given me a price of the sub non date at 6300. I did ask for a cash discount but was told that wasnt possible. Should I be more pushy? In the NY area right now they are almost on back order. Only a few available, but did find one and have it on hold. They can ship it to NJ and I can save on sales tax.
Can anyone advise if thats a decent deal. Ideally I would like a brand new one from an AD - but if thats not possible I have another option to bear in mind thanks to a heads up from another member on here. |

I read your posts, and I can say that I was at the same situation. SD is discontinued. Deepsea is too big and too expensive. Missed Coke Bezel GMT, regretful and now have 2 options: 14060M Sub No Date or 116610LN Ceramic Sub. Coke bezel GMT and the previous SD had a unique look, but I do not believe that Sub No Date has that kind of unique look, as they already achieved better look with the new ceramic Subs, and they will probably will produce the ceramic version of No Dates ( hopefully ) soon. Personally, 6300 is too high for that watch, a while ago I was quoted 5300 including shipment from an Ebay Private Rolex Seller with a high feedback. If you do not mind buying a second hand then going with an SD will be better as that has a unique feature and discontinued. Otherwise paying little bit more and getting new ceramic sub is better in my opinion. |

After comparing it with the new sub considering the new solid links, the sensitive adjustable clasp and the ceramic bezel I decided not to buy the old version. If you do not mind buying a second hand then going with an SD (unpolished and at least Z series ) will be an option. Otherwise paying little bit more and getting new ceramic sub is a better option in my opinion. I do not want to offend any 14060M owner, but that is my opinion at current market situation. |

IMO both the 14060M and the SD are very nice an I would not part with either of mine.
Having said that if I were to buy a Rolex 'diver' today I would most likely buy a new 116610. The clasp, bezel and dial upgrades etc on this new model make it hard to go past.

SD....once you compare it's weight and rugged feel to the no-date sub, you'll be hooked.....

even though the SD is discontinued, they can still be had in LNIB or BNIB condition if you look around and possibly contact some of the trusted sellers here on TRF.
At the very least, near mint condition examples can be had, and this would be the option I would go; the ones with lug holes diversify the SD and allow you to also use different strap combos with it. I have a SD and it is by far my favorite Rolex

There are not too many great preowned dealers in Manhattan. Sure, there are quite a few ADs but you will have to pay a premium and Rolex sport models are relatively hard to find.
IMO it would probably be better to buy from the FS section here. |

Personally, I like the 14060M better than the new ceramic date models, but it's a matter of personal preference.
The SD4000 (I guess that name is going to stick) is a great alternative to the Subs. I understand they are a pretty hot commodity on the used market, so now would probably be the time to pounce, if that's what you really want.

I have heard that discounts in NYC can be hard to find on the Tool watches but be patient and you should be able to get one. As stated we do have trusted sellers in the For Sale section so check them out. Both watches you are looking at are really nice and I'm sure opinions on which one to get will be pretty even. I bought and have a new Sub ND that I bought in February of 2009. It was purchased at a local AD and I got a 20% discount off of list.....good luck and happy hunting!!!
