I've never seen an "S" in "Submariner" shaped like that!

You said you expected to get a triple zero (168000), but got a double zero (16800) how come?

Nice eyes I did not notice the S that looks like a backwards Z till you said!
I don't now what happened at the Rolex repair guy's shop. I was talking to him about something else when this watch came up. I was sure he said 168000 and it was only made for 9 or so months so my ears went up. I looked at a couple pictures and bought it. When the box came out pop this 16800 ??? I have not talked to him yet not sure if it is bad or good? My guess is that he has a large number of watches and maybe got confused. It was a resale for one of his customers on the Island. Thats all I know.

What do you think of the S ?

I thought I was getting a 168000 but it came in the mail and it is a 16800. I was looking for a collectable I hope this qualifies. Is this the original box?
serial is 9.48 million Thanks for your input! $4000 in to it.
Well here are some pictures.

Great piece! Especially at 4k

Yes the patina is very cool and no cracks so far. I heard that this year range is called the spider because the paint was wrong and they develop cracks. So far none of that.

I was told buy the guy who replace the main spring that this was a matte dial. How can I tell the difference? It does look matte but very clean.
My Date Just from the same year is similar in the black Matte clean dial.
There certainly was a lot of sand!

I have a 16803 that has the spidering/crackling. I believe from what I have read that the lacquer was applied to thinly causing this. I have gone back and forth on this, but, have decided on keeping the watch original.

Great watch, congratulations.

Steve,I was hoping that your 16800 would find its way into this thread. Great looking watch...patina on dial and pearl is gorgeous.

Beautiful watch with gorgeous patina! The box does not belong to that wath based on the serial number. That box is for 4.5 to 5.9 million series approximately. Check rolexephemera.com for more info on boxes.
