Two very key parts of the book. An old man has a dog that is put down, but he reluctantly let's another man do it for him. He regretted this, and even told George that he should have done it himself out of respect.

When it was time for Lenny to be put down, George did it himself, out of compassion. He wouldn't let the lynch mob do it.

If you read the comment I responded to you'll see the connection.

Morning guys. Thanks for your thoughts. I see where Rich is coming from with the "Of Mice and Men" analogy, I hadn't thought of it but it's a long, long time since I read that book.

I must admit I was a little worried about posting the truth about what happened but I'm really heartend by the response from you guys...

I thought about making a hazy comment about him being "put down" but that would not only have been a lie but would have meant that I must have been ashamed of what I'd done... and I'm not!
I understand that most people wouldn't have done it themselves, and I respect that, but even those who have brought that up have shown they get why it was right for me/him.
Maybe a few people have read this and don't approve of my decision but have declined to comment. My thanks to them as well for not stirring things up.

Good on you all for understanding.

Sorry for your loss Mark especially when an animal is part of your life for so long, it is a member of your family!

Mark, I completely understand and agree with your decision, to do... it.... yourself. You have the utmost of my respect for doing what you felt was right for both you and Hector. I also respect those that decide they would rather not be a part of a loved ones death, I completely understand and it is 100% a personal choice; there is no right or wrong answer.

The only thing that is important, is that you are comfortable with the way Hector departed this world. There is no doubt in my mind Hector is OK with it too....

Heck, Hector is up there right now, in no pain, running around, healthy and happy and waiting for you to join him; just so he can play all the tricks on you he used to
