Explorer II Maxi Dial?

Love my new Explorer II. I like it in either the Black or White dial. I went with black, but I love the white as well.

Now I am now whining or "whinging" but Man I really wish it had a Maxi Dial. My eyesight up close is bad and the Maxi Dial is so easy to read. The Explorer II has become my daily Rolex, so I am just wishing.

Rant over.

Icon10 Photoshop scan request for Explorer II with maxi dial

If somebody can please post up a photo shop scan of an Explorer II with a maxi dial, I would really appreciate it! I have always loved the Exp II the way it currently is without the maxi dial but I want to see it with a maxi dial since I am curious about it.

I have said it before, and I will say it again. If the Explorer II had a non-reflective crystal and if they put the larger style hands on it, as on the new style GMT II, and threw the Blue Hairspring inside the movement - It would be the ultimate Watch!! I would sell all the others and keep just the Explorer IIs.

I think the Exp-II looks fantastic just as it is. Why put on a maxi dial and overcrowd that beautiful watch?

It's not like the present dial markers are too small and hard to read. On the contrary, the white Exp-II dial is one of the easiest and quickest dials to read in the Rolex range and a maxi dial would be simply throwing in too much Luminova and cluttering the dial.

JJ

I could not agree with you more JJ! I agree with you 110 percent! I also say the Explorer II is beautiful just the way it is.

JJ, I would have to respectfully disagree. I have a white dial Explorer II and it has the worst lum, especially the minute hand, out of any Rolex I have owned. I would not change the Hour Markers and make them bigger, but it could definately use the larger hands, with more lum surface.

You are so right. I was wondering what it would look like on a black strap? Might be like having two watches in one.

If maxi-dials, big hands, block cases and Triplocks go on everything, then the only difference will be the bezel..

New trend...
,,,,.Buy one watch and just change bezels...Hey, didn't Swatch already do that back in the 70's...

Just got in the new issue of National Geographic yesterday, and there on the back cover is a full page picture of...you guessed it, the white dial Explorer II.

No copy, except for a phone number to call for a list of "Rolex Jewelers," as the watch speaks for itself.

That is one view. A different view (mine) is that Rolex fell behind its competitors dramatically in night use by using too little Luminova (now Superluminova) over the years. Nothing will beat a Ball, but at least currently when I look at the GMT IIC with maxi-dial after 7 or so hours in the dark, and compare it to an equally charged GP Evo 3 with sword hands, the Rolex doesn't give much ground. That is new with the wider minute hands, and larger superluminova treatment, and speaking for myself is the reason I came back to Rolex.

As I look at my collection of watches, the movement has been toward larger faces, with clear, legible information, readable both day and night, with functions that I use, and no functions that I don't use. I doubt I am alone. There are many fine luxury brands available today, and well publicized. Rolex needs to upgrade a few things to stay competitive and sell all the watches that they do every year (800,000?). Maxi-dials are a step in that direction.

When they increase the case size in the Sea Dweller to 43 mm using the Clownmaster II case, and put a maxi-dial on it, I will be first in line to buy one. Until then I'll use my Breitling for those duties. I used to own Daytonas, but now I use the 44 mm Girard Perregaux 18K gold for the same purpose, and I would never go back to a 40 mm dial with chrono subdials. My eyes are just too old to make out the subdials, and I want illuminated hands on subdials. And so on.

I think Rolex will have to come around to its aging buyer demographics. I've given watches to my kids and they don't wear them. They use their cell phones for time, alarms, etc.

Guys older than me (57) want the old status quo, because there were "proper" watches to be worn in particular circumstances. But here in the US we have the "baby boomer" generation, the largest, most willing to spend dollars on luxury items, ever. And our collective eyesight is going bad. Bigger dials, more lume, great legibility is the wave of the future here, I think. I'd even like to dump the cyclops, but I like the GMT II C too much to go that direction.

Just my .02 of the Euro or .014 of the pound.
