As a grandson and recepient of my grandfathers watch I can say my current "collection" only consists of a single rolex. His. I look at new ones all the time but this biggest reason keeping me from getting a new one is the history. I received the watch from him 3 years before he died because even when he wore it, he was no longer active enough for the time to stay accurate. He purchased it new in 1970 and wore it for 29 years. I have now worn it for almost 13 years. If I did get a new watch I don't know which I would wear regularly. I can say because I have two young daughters, I look forward to the day when one has a son that I can someday pass this one on to. Maybe then I'll get myself a new one.

Thanks, Jagger!
Calmo! Welcome! That is awesome that he gave it to you while he was alive... That would mean a lot to me! Which one did he give you? I can't help but think that every time you look at the time, you grandfather is looking down at you Tom |

I think it really boils down to your son, how much he understands and appreciates watches and his maturity level. Regardless of which way you go, if you raised him right, he will appreciate either the vintage or the newer model. Good luck to you and your son.

It is a Circa 1970 SS Oyster Datejust, case 1603, with jubilee bracelet. No papers but I do have the original green box with nothing in it (besides the original Oyster bracelet he swapped out). Just got it back today from being overhauled (first in at least 13 years if it ever had one in it's 41 year history) today and happy to have it back on my wrist. Aaron |

The older one would do best, in my opinion. At least the older one has a story instead of a newer one in which you just bought out of the case.
