Is the local jeweler asking too much for the repair?

I first noticed that I was having a little trouble winding my GMT 16700, Ser#N22XXXX. Then it did not wind at all and I had to pull hard on the crown to move the hands.

I took it down to a reputable local jeweler that had a Rolex Certified Technician that could buy parts from Rolex, replace the necessary parts with Rolex Parts, and a year warranty. I left it for an estimate.

The jeweler called me and told me it would cost $1041 to replace the necessary parts for the winder, service and polish the watch. It would come with a year warranty.

I looked at some RF Threads to see if this was reasonable, but did not find anything current. It seemed a little high.

Is this reasonable or should I send it to an RFC. What should I expect to pay at the RFC and which is the one to send it to?

Thanks

Assuming $600 service, $200 polish, $200+ parts and taxes... within reason. Personally, I'd send it to RSC for the two yr warranty near the same price.

That price is about $500 too expensive for an independent watchmaker. I'd expect to pay $400-$600 for a service at an independent watchmaker with a parts account. And if I'm spending $600, I'd rather send it in to Rolex. The polish should be included in the price. I can't imagine any parts he would need costing $500. You are being ripped off.

Depending on the parts that need to be replace, there are single parts that are upwards of $500 or pretty close to it. Your estimate should say what parts you need to have replace if not ask them if they can note them down for you. He might be charging a little on top of the actual cost of the part, after all who works for free?
You can always get a second opinion take it somewhere else.
Typically overhaul should run around 250-400 (one year warranty) and a polish about 150 any parts needed are extra $
I would agree that at 1000 the polishing should be done for free.

I thought the RSC service included a polish.

Bring/Send it to the Rolex repair in San Francisco at 210 Post, 7th Floor.
Giovanni is a great guy and he gives 2 yr warranty. That's what I'd do.

I called the RFC in Beverly Hills, explained my problem about the crown not winding and having to pull hard out to move the hands, and was told the service would cost $600 and if I needed a crown, she estimated $75. She said the polish was included.

She also told me that if I brought the watch in, they would do an estimate of repair in about 20 minutes. I live about an hour from Beverly Hills so I could take both watches in, service one for sure, maybe both, for a little more than the jeweler wanted for one. Seems like a no brainer.

Thanks, one and all for the good advice.

too high... just wrong, half the warranty of RSC + uncertainty about parts and tools used vs state of the art tech at RSC.... if it were significantly cheaper with a known reputation, maybe, but its not.

no deal.
