Almost lost my Sub16800 (1984)
On Saturday I decided to sell my 16800 via consignment at the store where I had purchased it. I put the watch/box, etc, in the trunk and prepared to drop it off. I never made it to the store on Saturday.
Today I wake to find out that the store was robbed on Sunday. I don't know what was taken, but I have a feeling I may have been out of luck had I dropped my Sub off there... http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/...jewelry-store/ Guys, I think the gods have spoken, they don't want me to sell my Submariner...!

You and your 16800 were meant to stay together... you know, like the Song "Let's stay together."

I wonder if it wouldn't have been something they would have to assume responsibilty for.
However I am glad to hear it came to no harm, and it's not something you had to worry about. Besides I think you are better off keeping it.

WhiteSub
Just to compare, I stopped off at an AD who had an older 1680 recently brought back from service. I realized that the 1680 fits a little smaller/lower on my wrist, and the bezel is thinner, and the dome crystal is awesome. They denied my straight 16800 trade offer, so I didn't take their 1680 sub, but now I know I really like that model...
They wanted $7,500, which is really high- I think that's what you pay for a RedSub. Here are the pics...

Although you may have purchased from Unicorn, not sure they would be my choice for consignment, as most whom go into Unicorn a looking to simply get a battery replaced, which proves to be difficult on a Rolex. That said, they typically don't have a true Rolex client base. I would call Tony from Just Rolex in Del Mar, he would be able to work something out on all sides that makes more sense in my opinion. Also, just out of curiousity, which authorized dealer had the 1680?

Oh yeah, I am hooked on vintage watches, so I'll probably end up trading my 16800 for a GMT or sub 1680- I'm sure there is someone in Socal looking for a 16800.

Actually, that does make sense. However, they do always seem to be well over priced on the what they have in the resale case! But, I typically stop in, as they often have some interesting pieces!

Sub is up for sale... the 16800 that is...
I want to thank everyone for their input, but in the end, I decided to put my 16800 Sub up for sale on TRF. This just proves that I am truly a vintage watch guy. Wish me luck on my first Rolex sale...

Good luck. I actually did stop by Tourneau and that 1680 is pretty cool looking for sure. If you do that, I hope you can get them down a bit on that price!
