LV sub with Oriental decaled characters??

I was in a used dealer today and spotted an LV. Looked behind and there's this decal that's got the coronet in the middle and with either Chinese or Japanese characters around the coronet. She told me it's from Japan. I asked to take a pic n she gets all defensive n asked "do you think we're selling fakes"

Anyone got anyclue where that might be from??

Are you talking about the case-back sticker? If so, I've seen pictures of this before, but I can't speak to its authenticity.

Yes, it's the caseback sticker I'm talking about. I do not doubt it's authenticity but I've never heard or seen any pictures in this forum or anywhere else.

Is this what you're referring to, the sticker placed over the hologram for the Japanese market?

She is right. It is from Japan. All Rolex sold new in Japan have an additional sticker over the hologram on the caseback. It has Japanese Kanji and Katakana characters on it.

I'm glad to hear it's authentic because that's a pretty sticker.

But what are "Kanji" and "Katakana" characters and what is the English translation?

But what are "Kanji" and "Katakana" characters and what is the English translation?

Kanji are the characters that were borrowed from the Chinese around a thousand years ago.

Katakana are characters developed by the Japanese to write words and pronounce them with a Japanese pronunciation for Western words that have no origin in Japan or from China.

For example Rolex would be Rorexu. Beeru is beeiru. Television is teribi.

I can't give you an example of this as I don't have a Japanese capable computer keyboard.

On top of that you also have hiragana characters to learn when studying how to read Japanese. I studied for a year and a half and I read at about a 3rd grade level.

There are literally thousands of Kanji and hundreds of hiragana and katakana.

In order to simply read the newspaper you need all hiragana and katakana as well as at least 1,000 Kanji memorized.

Most high school gradutes are lucky if they know 1,000 Kanji.

On top of that there are Kanji that only the Emperor is allowed to study, so unless you are him you are not fuent in Kanji.

As far as the sticker on the back I can read part of it. Japan Rolex. After that I am done.

I think I am going to get that whole sticker translated for you guys.

One of my students is Japanese, 2nd generation Canadian. I asked him about it today, he'll have the translation tomorrow.

Going clockwise from Direct Import he thinks it's something like "by boat" or "by ship". Hopefully I'll have it tomorrow.

My friend in Japan says that it is just another level of protection or certification because of all the fakes in Japan.

Hi Thomas, I used to have a Japanese room-mate in Phx, Az and learned that Japanese don't just use 1 form of Japan language. They have business, casual, street styled Japanese languages and are very different. As much as I know or can recall.

Yea, definitely that is another layer of what makes Japanese so hard. I lived there for 4 1/2 years and it was fun, but a struggle. On top of that culturally there is Honnae (what you really feel) and tatemae (what you think the other person wants to hear.)

The Japanese hate confrontation or conflict and always aim to save everybody's face in a conversation. So tatemae is often used. Not so much with close friends, you get the real deal, but with strangers it can be a challenge to decipher if they are really telling you how they feel in a situation.

Then you have very distinct diferent dialects for various regions. I lived in Osaka thus learned Kansai-Ben (Osaka/Kansai dialect.) The minute I open my mouth speaking Japanese here in the States Japanese immediately are shocked and scream out "Osaka Ben!" Very distinct. People from Okinawa to Hokkaido understand each other it is just a serios of accents and different endings on words as well as different vocabulary.

One theory for why there are so many regional dialects is this. Before Japan was united under the Tokugawa Shogunate, Japan was a series of small little fiefdoms that were constantly at war with each other. The dialects were created to instantly be able to determime if someone you met in your region was a spy or not.

Loved it so much I ended up staying foir 4 1/2 years.

Dying to go back if I can find a job over there.

Trying hard to make that happen. Anybody over there have a line on a job for me?
