Hot Tubs

I know that I can wear my watch in chlorine pools, just clean afterwards, but does it do any long term damage wearing the watch for great length in the hot tub...heat being the only concern? I'm sure the answer is no, but I've been wondering.

It depends on the humidity when you watch was last opened and sealed. That same humidity is in your watch. When temperature changes rapidly moisture separates and condenses. Sometimes, you can see a watch fog up after it has been in a hot tub. So it depend on if your watch was last serviced in Arizona or Washington State. You cannot change physics.

As for the "what happens when you boil and oyster". I am sure the engineer in charge of the public relations advertisement made sure the air was dry when the watch was sealed previous to the experiment, as he too understand physics.

Now will a bit of condensation inside your watch for a fairly short period of time ruin your watch ... likely not.

"Obviously nobody in his right mind would want to boil his Rolex."

Yes. Crazy stuff. Who would think that might be a fun thing to do?!

Can I wear it in the hot tub?

Yes

A call I placed to the Rolex service center said it's no problem. Many forum members (who all appear to have much more fun than I do) say they do it all the time with no problem. If the watch was designed to take hundreds of meters of pressure it should be able to handle a few feet of bubbly warm water. Some say that a hot tub alone is not a problem, but don't jump straight into a cold pool.

No

The seals were not designed for water that hot. And, especially do not jump straight from the hot-tub into a cold pool, as thermal expansion problems that may damage the seals.

Mike,
Let me try to convey what one of our Mods have said many times, we live in the desert of Mojave.
It's not uncommon to have tempatures of above 105 during June, July and August and it can reach almost 110 very easy . Now a jacuzzi is usually 102 or so. 105 would be for a lobster cook out. I've left my watch in my car were it reached 135 degrees one summer. Not smart, but had to do it .

Your watch will be fine.

Short term consequences? None.
Long term consequences? Nobody really knows, but some people do suspect a bit more wear on the delrin crystal gasket if the watch is exposed to frequent temperature variations. But nothing that a good gasket change every 5-7 years would'nt solve:

A 15yo watch without gasket change, which goes from hot sun to cold water is much more prone to fail than a watch which has been serviced regularly.

A "Hot Tub" isn't really that hot..

We have hotter summer days all summer long here in the Desert than the heat your watch will experience for a few minutes in a hot tub...

I don't wear a watch in hot tubs, jacuzzis, steam bath, saunas.

if Lindsay Lohan has been in the hot tub within the past 6 hours, I would say 'no'.

Or my brother and his wife. Gawd, if the people using it after them only knew.
