Should I change it?
Hello,
I'm a Rolex noob and getting the hang of it because of a recent gift I bought for my father. I bought him the Rolex Daytona 116523 (Steel and Gold) Mother of Pearl Dial with diamond numerals. He loved it, he just didn't like the fact that it doesn't have the date which can be useful vs. the chronograph and tachymeter (on the bezel) which he will never use. He's 62 btw. He asked me if I can change it to the Submariner 116613 (Steel and Gold) blue dial with diamond numerals. I want to go to my AD and see if anything can be done. It's never worn, all protection and tags are as is etc. My dad told me if nothing can be done, or if there will be some kind of loss, then don't bother, he'll settle with it, but I wouldn't want to have that thing at the back of my head, as it is my first gift for him. My question is which would you think looks/is better? Which has a better resale value? Would you recommend me to change it, given that I can? |

Well the one that looks better is the one your Father likes the most, and will add all Rolex in general will hold there prices well. But today its the S.Steel mainly sports models that hold there prices better than any TT watch, or any with diamond dials in proportion to price paid if bought new.And mostly if going to re-sell its the TT, gold diamonds watches that takes the biggest hit.

Have him pick it out.

Welcome to TRF.
Only you can decide whether it is best to turn it in or not. Chances are your going to suffer a loss trying to turn this new watch in. It's no longer new. I would call the AD first and see what they can do for you. If your willing to take the loss I would take my Dad in and have him pick out the watch this time just to make sure he gets what he wants. I wouldn't tell him about the loss however.

What "is" better in this situation is subjective also. I think they are of equal quality, but it sounds like from your dad's perspective, having a date function is better than having a chronograph function. As to resale, I'm no expert, but I concur with Padi's comments (after all, he's an authority on all things Rolex with information on hand faster than any search engine! ). Given that you said your father has as much told you he would prefer you change it and that you said you can, I think the answer is self evident. I would recommend doing what will make your dad happy. |

Yep agree.
Call your AD and be sure you know the financials in advance - they may be happy to do this with a small re-stock fee. It gets that sticky discussion done in private. Then arrange a time when they can show him several models with a date. The experience will remain with him and he gets a watch better suited to his needs.
