Icon14 Just picked up a MINT 16520 Daytona A series White Dial

I just picked a very mint condition A series Zenith movement white dial.

I am a Panerai collector and this is my first Rolex as i am a 44mm or 47mm big face watch fan.

I finally decided to get a 16520 over a 116520 and am very happy with the purchase and love the way it sits on my wrist.

I am taking it to Rolex at BH next week to get a full service for good measure and get a brand new bezel as there is a tiny dot of a nick on the bezel which only i can see. I know i am extremely anal.

The one thing I noticed it that i cannot see what time it is at night when it is dark. Is it normal that you can't see this for watches produced in 1999?

Is this something they can fix at service??

Myself not a huge fan of the modern Daytona but prefer the Zenith dial and dial layout.Myself would not have a replacement bezel because if you do bet you life on it it will get dinged again just see how it comes back after its service. And its a A serial watch not a series Rolex have not made a series of any watch. Now your dial is the change over from Tritium to luminover which happened end of 1999 early 2000.So its still possible the lume could be Tritium although no markings on the dial, but would expect its Luminover. Rolex lume is not the best, mainly because of the very small surface area on the hands and dial markers makes for poor lume glow. Now the bigger total lume surface area like say on a Panerai the brighter the lume, but in general lume brightness is way down the list in priority's in any watch for me.

Welcome to TRF and congrats for this purchase, beautiful watch!

And yes, it is normal that the lume gets weaker after so many years, maybe you have to change the dial with a new one or ask RSC if re-luming is possible.

Enjoy it!

Very nice! SL dial should be legible at night. A service dial and handset would remedy the issue, but I wouldn't do it.

Congrats on a beautiful watch.

Do not do either or you will completely ruin the value of your watch!!! Live with it and enjoy it for what it is!

PS. Leave the bezel alone and don't let RSC change anything on the watch--keep it all original. In fact don't even take it there if it is running perfectly--save your money!

Well said Ken!! Like Padi said, the lume area is so small on the hands and dial of these, you still won't see it even after a replacement so its just a waste of money. And not only will you not see it, but the value on the watch will be gone ;)

a thought regarding bezel replacement if you go that route - not sure if the replacement would have the engraved tach #'s like those on the Zenith Daytona. You might end up with a replacement bezel that looks like the current model's
One other thing... BRUSH the center link!!
Enjoy

Guys thank you for the warm welcome its nice to see so many friendly people here and the wonderful insight i am getting.

I will take all of your advice and leave the watch alone and live with the tiny imperfections and the lume.

I was almost wondering for a moment if this was a replica as the lume was not showing at all at night and I am not used to this. I normally don't buy used watches and only buy brand new but obviously i had no choice with the 16520 zenith models.

I am thinking about getting the brushed bracelet in the middle as well how much would a new bracelet be? I really don't want to mess with the original bracelet that came with this watch as it can hurt the value of this piece.

Here is a photo of my recent Panaerai I just got 47mm detsro PAM368 I wanted to share with you guys although I know this is not panelist forums. The 47mm face is gigantic next to my daytona LOL. I have found that the daytona looks really good as dressy watch with a nice suit and the Panerai's tend to look less formal.

Again want to personally thank everyone for the comments and feedback really do appreciate it.

The voice of the purists, ok, ok, nothing wrong with it!

But...I personally do not care. I want a watch that is fully functional, and legibility is important!

To each his own.......original parts for the purists (althogh I never understood exactly why..resale value? Nostalgia?..), functionality for me!

In any case you got a great watch, enjoy it!

New bracelet without a swap of your old one will be well over a grand. Brushing the mid links is something easy enough to restore to the original state that it won't be a problem to repolish it back.

Welcome to TRF! You picked up a beautiful watch, I wish you to wear it in good health.

By the way, you can do what you want with your watch but I wouldn't change anything on it.

I agree with this, especially the postscript.

IF you must have functional lume I would suggest a stellar watchmaker with a Rolex parts account who could replace just the hour and minute hands (and give you the originals).

I'd leave it alone, but this way you'd be able to return it to 100% original condition for any future sale/trade.
