Is there a "rule of thumb" on how often a Datejust model should be serviced?

Picked up a 1965 datejust 14k & stainless on eBay recently and don't know the service history. Showed it to a jeweler who said that I should have it serviced/overhauled. Bottom line, watch has one medium scratch on the crystal, but presentation is good and it keeps good time. Was also recommended to replace the watch hands and go with a leather band. Jubilee 14k and stainless band is old, but looks and feels good. Is there any downside to wearing the band until it finally wears out?

This is my first Rolex is 20 years. Back in the late 1980's/early 1990's I had a GMT Master and a stainless datejust.

Typically, a mechanical watch should be serviced every 5-7 years, depending on it's use..

I would not recommend replacing the hands unless you have some deterioration. Most of the value in an older watch is in the hands and dial.

If you are concerned with lume, the DJ does not have enough lume on the hands to bother..

No downside to wearing your original bracelet. Keep it clean and wear it properly (not too loose), and it should last for many more years if is is currently in good condition..

You can use polywatch to buff out the scratch on your acrylic crystal.

Send us a photo, it will further help in other members giving advice.

My SD went in for it's first 7 yrs maintenance 2 wks ago.

I was told that one should only service when its not accurate or the power reserve is running down.

You could go as much as 7-10 years as long as it is keeping time within COSC specs....
