birth year 5513...

received this one the other day and loving it more and more. no it's not perfect and near the quality of some of the super nice collector/museum pieces that folks have here. but this one has some nice "character" flaws, is within a couple of months of my birthday, and more importantly "connects" with me. as my first vintage piece, i think i am keeping this one :). i have another leather strap on it's way... but so far, loving this watch!

it is a 1970 piece... and more specifically IV. i just had my birthday last weekend so it is a nice birthday present to myself :). it is my daily office wearer, so I didn't want something "too nice" where if it got a scratch or ding, i would be really bummed. so in that respect, this one is "perfect"....

You gotta love the 5513. In the past I didn't see the attraction. However, once I put one on, I was sold. That 5513 has led to many others. IMO few other Rolex watches from the '70's embody the tool watch concept as well. Congrats on yours.

Congratulations! It is a beautiful watch. I have the same birthyear and was also thinking of getting a birthyear vintage watch. I just bought a 1978 submariner and await anxiously its arrival. However, some time in the future I still plan to get a 1970 5513 as my birthyear watch. Therefore, may I ask where you bought it from and what range of serial number I have to look for a 1970's vintage watch?

Thanks,

Boris

Great selection for your 1st (and likely not your last) vintage. You will love it, get it pressure tested and you are good to go

What can a dial expert tell me about this dial? Maxi? Pre? Other?
Thanks

Serif dial, but the pics are little blurry. That's good for a 70's 5513.

Congratulations on your choice for a birthday present :)

I have a 5512 and totally love.

May I make a suggestion as an alternative to your strap, maybe get a NATO or ZULU strap to compliment the watch.

been busy enjoying my weekend hiking/trail running in Tahoe so i just got back on here at TRF...

thanks all... yes my 5513 is a feet first Serif Dial with a 2,9xxx,xxx serial number. i bought it from Jacek, who i highly recommend. several months ago i actually had another 5513 from 1970 from a well known vintage dealer. for some reason, that particular watch and i just did not "connect", like this one. i returned it to that dealer within my 3 day window and picked up a 14060m. however when i saw this one (and a 5512 that Jacek had for sale).... i knew i was going pull the trigger on one of them. in the end, i went with this piece and like i said, been enjoying it all week. i do have some nato straps and with the warmer weather, might switch over to one of them.... like a new watch all over again.

i also see more vintage pieces in my future.... but with the ski season coming up in a few months (and a couple of daughters who $ki race competitively), i might have to wait till my next birthday. anyhow, the search and the chase is all part of the fun.... right ?!?!

thanks again everyone.... time to go stand up paddling now....

My birth year sub will have to be an early 5512! (< 1 mil serial). On the lookout for one, but the PCG's get expensive.

Congrats! I was looking at 1978 as well, it is the year I married my beautiful wife! If I go back to my birth year the Rolexes get really difficult to find- 1957!
