Mathew I think you hit it with
"my dilemma lies in my trying to "rationalize" why I would spend so much money on a sports watch that is expensive to service only to be abused and then spend very little (comparably) on a dress piece that is nicer finished and more refined..the more I think about it the less sense it makes, then again maybe I am just trying to rationalize dropping the Rolex as honestly I am not overly thrilled with it."

As you say your not overly thrilled with it so, if it doesn't "make you smile" my thoughts are get away from it and the stress of owning it. No more having to try to justify the watch to yourself, the cost of maintaining it or as to the cost of it vs. quality so on and so-forth.

Final thought is yup the statement of "it's just a freaking watch......" is completely correct.

Let a thousnad flowers bloom...

Quote:"Watches and Their Accessories

Pocket watches were immensely popular between 1850 and 1950. Cases were manufactured from solid gold: 9k, 10k, and 18k. Larger cases fell out of favor when new, smaller movements and thinner cases in platinum and gold were introduced in the 1920's.

Watch chains are of many link styles and variations. The most popular was the "Albert chain," named after Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert. This chain would go through the vest or waistcoat button hole. The watch attached at one end; an accessory attached to the other. A man's watch chain functioned like a woman's chatelaine but with fewer whimsical or sentimental charms attached to it.

Watch chain accessories could include cigar cutters, pipe tools, or small penknives (usually very thin, with no more than two blades). Watch fobs, highly decorative pendant-like devices, were usually set with a hard stone. Some would have fraternal significance, such as for Masons, Odd Fellows, or Phi Beta Kappa. Tiffany & Co. cleverly marketed a bezel-set cross section of transatlantic cable as a watch fob in the mid-1800's. An imperative accessory for the early watch was the winding key used to wind and set the watch. It could range from very basic to highly ornamental, and some had mechanical music machines. " From Victorian Etiquette.

When people started wearing a pocket watch on their wrist that was a major faux pas. What was the world coming too!
Chairman Mao said: "Let a thousand flowers bloom". Let a thousand watches bloom and there are thousands of different models in the International Watches book I have and most are unbelievably ornate. Something you would not be seen dead in Mathew another guy finds just fine.
I would not be too precious about whether there are standards that must be adhered to. There are no rules. I play pool at my local wearing a very dressy Piaget with a rare lapis dial.I'm in a village where no one I have yet met knows the difference between a Rolex and an Omega and to be honest no one gives.
My everyday watch is an 18K Perpetual on a 18K bracelet and I'm very rarely out of jeans.
Another chinese leader said: "Who cares if the cat is black or brown as long as it catches the mice."
My little philosophical spiel for the day.

Atomic,

Generally I view taking a loss on a sub to pay more for an explorer in my case as something I wouldn't consider, thus for me it would be a "step down" from where I am now...now had I purchased the Explorer from the start I wouldn't feel that way. With the Yachtmaster the solid bracelet and the plat bezel and dial along with the higher price would make it feel like an upgrade even if it truly wasn't. Also as I said I am not a huge fan of the twinlock crown at this price point, I agree it is a more comfortable solution but I prefer the look and the engineering of the triplock crown as it seems far more substantial. I view the Daytona also as a step up from the sub due to the bracelet and clasp as well as the movement with its ball bearing rotor and 70 hour power reserve. I think I would have been fine had they done a better job on the finish of my Sub however just cannot get it out of my head that it isn't right and they aren't willing to do anything.

With the JLC I have been looking for an older style and it seems like they are getting difficult to come by, local dealer only has the new style in...generally I prefer current models because they are easier to find, sometimes with discontinued models you get a good price but in this case I think it may be the opposite as many don't seem to favor the new model.

I think Earl hit it in that I should start exploring options to bail on the Sub since I am not overly thrilled with it...though the financial loss and the wife will not be fun dealing with either :)

Hi Mathew,

Not sure if I read this right, but from your post you give the impression that you've understood the YM to have a twinlock crown. Only the 29 mm and 35 mm are fitted with Twinlock crowns. The full size 40 mm has a TRIPLOCK crown.

Cheers - JJ

JJ I was saying that the Explorer has a twinlock, I knew that the YM in fullsize has a trip lock just as the daytona has the triplock.
