GMT II Bezel

OK ... I get the Hour and Minute hands ... and I get the 24 hour hand. It's very cool to click the hour hand over to the new time zone and watch the second hand still tick away; however, where does the rotating bezel come into play?

You know Ginny,

My personal feeling is that the independent hour hand has almost made the rotating bezel superflous.

If your 24 hr hand is set to your local time, you can rotate the bezel to temporarily monitor another timezone.. For example, if you were 1 hour from GMT, you could rotate the bezel 1 hour and you would be reading GMT off the bezel rather than your local. Or if you were 12 hours from Zimbabwe time, you would rotate the Bezel 12 hours and you would be reading Zimbabwe time..

If you have the GMT hand set to GMT time, then you would offset the bezel to plus or minus where that timezone was you wanted to monitor in relation to GMT.

Yes so actually you can monitor up to 3 time zones at once.
1. Local time (standard hour hand)
2. 24 hour hand set to another time zone.
3. Bezel set to another time zone.

And on top of those functions, you can even use the GMT as a COMPASS!

GMT uses as a compass! CLICK!

So 3 timezones, compass, and a simple timing devise. The bezel makes the GMT a very versatile watch.

Do not mean to derail the thread but I would love to get the English translation of the attachment if it exists.

I see what you mean!

Well, since I have an MA in German, I will translate the whole darned thing for you

Here goes:

Headline: "WATCH WITH COMPASS FUNCTION"

Text:

"Every watch can be used as a compass, but only when the sun shines. On the GMT and Explorer II the 24-hour hand works as a compass needle, but it also works with every other type of watch! Astonishing!
Now a tutorial and a thank you to the watch collector Georg Burger who provided it. It is very easy to do with the:

Rolex GMT Master or Explorer II:

1) Set the "normal" hour hand to point towards the sun
2) The 24-hour hand then is the "compass needle" and points EXACTLY to the North (if you are on the Northern hemisphere, that is, or else the 24-hour hand points to the South)

IMPORTANT: The hour hand and the 24-hour hand MUST point to the same time!

Normal watch with second time zone:

But it also works with a "normal" watch, albeit you - unlike with the GMT and Explorer II - have to do a little more thinking:

1) Set the hour hand to point towards the sun.
2) In your mind, create a "line" that goes from 12 o' clock, diving the watch dial in two halfs.
3) The half angle between the "line you created in your mind" and the hour hand points to the South.

Important: During DST (Daylight Saving Time) the "theoretical line" must go from the 1 o' clock position diving the dial in two halfs instead of dividing it from the 12 o' clock position".

----------------------

The pic:

"Arrow pointing towards the sun says:

"Let the hour hand point towards the sun"

Arrow pointing towards the North says:

"24 hour hand points towards the North"

Under the pic it says:

"Compass function with the GMT and Explorer II (source: Georg Burger)."

Much obliged Bo! Thanks.

BTW, Thanks to your translation I just discovered another use for the rotating bezel of the YM. The 60 marker of the bezel (triangular shape) could be rotated to line up with the half angle between the virtual half line of the dial and the hour marker. Then the bezel triangle points to the south.

I was at a soccer tournament this afternoon and I was showing my wife this neat new trick. She doesn't get nearly as excited about this stuff as I do.
