Purchasing Rolex on Ebay...
Is purchasing on ebay recommended or considered taboo?
I have a couple local resellers in Toronto that are reputable, but the prices are still somewhat outrageous. I know you get what you pay for, but I have a hard time resisting some of the very reasonable prices on ebay. Even though I will have to pay taxes + duty, buying in the USA, I still think I am saving quite a bit. Would even consider traveling to Buffalo or Detroit to buy from reputable resellers, who have solid reps - any recommendations? Anyway... back to ebay. Any users have experience with KnV Collection on ebay? Or recommend any other web based resellers? Ideally, would like to purchase a 14k or 18k DATE model. Late enough to have a sapphire crystal and quickset feature.... Cheers, Art |

Swissluxury.com and alan furman has been thrown out here a few times as good grey dealers.
But I was able to get my SD at a lower price from an official AD. I would call around some ADs and see if they will discount and ship to you. I am sure members here that had this experience would be glad to ping you. Good Luck! |

There are some TRF members here that have bought on EBay with good results. They did thier research and bought the seller as well as the watch.
Personally I don't have the kahones for it. AD all the way for me. |

I dont recommend, since long time I look at ebay for Rolex and good grey sellers sell brand new and also used Rolexes too. But prices of good sellers are so much high nearly same as AD. No chance to check the watch, no warranty, and if you also pay tax on it so forget to buy and then where is the profit? Also they can charge %5 from Paypal which is big amount over thousands. If there is something wrong, have an heartattack and turn back to beginning with contacting with seller that will respond probably late to send watch back and wait and pay again just for few hundreds. You can also save that amount with flying to cheap Rolex countries and make your 2 days holiday with the hundreds that you saved, to be able to check and the guarantee will be your profit, so forget Ebay for Rolex.

Welcome to TRF!
As stated, if you want to buy a Rolex online, www.alanfurman.com www.swissluxyry.com and www.preownedrolex.com are very good places to buy. Now, you CAN do very good deals on eBay, too, but you need to do a little more "homework" before indulging in buying from eBay. Best advice is to "buy the seller, before buying the watch" Now, AL ("Alcan" here on TRF) has done some GREAT deals on eBay, so he will second that you can indeed buy from that site without burning your fingers. I for my part simply buy BNIB (Brand New In Box) from an AD (Authorized Dealer) ONLY since I believe nothing beats the feeling of buying a FRESH Rolex, and if you have good negotiation skills, often you can get a good discount on the watch (anything from 5 to 25 % depending on the model, TT (Two-Tone (steel + gold) and YG (Yellow gold) being easier to get a discount on because both the AD and Rolex earn more on those). SOME sport's Rolex watches would never be discounted, for the time being the SS Daytona and the (coming) Milgauss. Good luck! And - as the say in the tv series "Hill Street Blues": "Be CAREFUL out there!"

I think it would come down to how much risk you are willing to take on for the savings. Buying from the AD gives you the peace of mind that the watch is authentic but at higher price. On ebay and at other grey dealers you will want to do more research and search for recommendations too. To buy successfully from ebay you will have to be an expert at detecting fakes and also you will need to know what the current resale market is too. Rolex is a bit more difficult than most other manufacturers to get a high discount from because to begin with they charge their dealers 58% of the manufacture price, giving dealers a smaller profit margin to begin with and they have a big enough corporate staff to "enforce" their pricing structures in various ways. This means that people who want to resell Rolex but are not official dealers have to jump through all kinds of hoops in order to carry out their trade. In addition to ebay and the grey market you should also look at the various forums and study the prices there for guidance and you might find a good deal there too, you never know.

My typical response:
I had both a watchmaker w/28 years experience and a RUSA technician (initially) not detect my counterfeit from eBay. The level of refinement on certain fakes is astounding . The fake watch on eBay came from highly respected seller with perfect to near perfect feedback and a history of selling virtually nothing but Rolex. (100's upon 100's) Just something to think about... |

Do not buy on ebay unless you are an expert or rely upon expert advice. Buy only from someone you know and respect or from someone who is known to those whom you know and respect, or from an authorized dealer. You don't wanna get burned for big $$ do you?

drive across the border and get one. then ship the box and stuff via mail.
wear the watch cross the border. who's care. please do not leave the hang tag around your wrist. (brother to brother advice) a few hundred bucks different, why buy used? it worth every penny you spend on the new one. |

Didn't you recently consider moving to the DARK SIDE. "I contacted www.swissluxury.com about the SS GMT IIc that they are offering for sale. But since I live in Denmark, I would be get a huge custom's fee + Danish VAT if I buy it and have it sent to Denmark. So I asked SL if they would be willing to put an "Invoice" in the parcel stating that it is a "Returned Repair" and state a value of 25 US Dollars on the custom's label. That way I would avoid the fees and get the SS GMT IIc about 1,000 Dollars CHEAPER than the deal my other good old AD offered me with 12 % discount since for one the price of the SS GMT IIc is simply lower than in Denmark and secondly because the Dollars rate is low for the time being." Well Bo, I think you gave some good reasons for buying from Ebay. As an aside, most insurance Companies offer 'goods in transit insurance'. If SwissLuxury give you the s/n of the GMT and a copy of the invoice, they can mark the Rolex 'returned from repair' and no value need be put on the documents but you have full insurance cover. This would cost about $150.00. Have the item registered and you would be good to go.

Yes, I did consider it, Eddie, but as you would know I am going for the legit way. So in fact, I buy BNIB from an AD only.
Anyway, thanks for the insurance tip.

I only buy with a credit card. That way if the transaction goes south, I call my card company and dispute the charge.
