The latest price is US 130 plus shipping. Good thing for me was that they were able to ship here to Canada. I've a quarter of a way through it. Just finished the history portion. While it was not very detailed, it was a nice summary. The weight of the book alone probably accounts for half the price!

Update. I just got off the phone with the NYC Boutique. $130. After today, they are no longer selling them in the NYC Boutique. They will refer you to a website to purchase from. I didn't have any luck using the website so I am getting sent one of the last few they have. Apparently they are being removed from the boutique. Got in just in time!! Should have it tomorrow! I'm excited!

I got the RO 40th anniversary book last week and love it so far. The celeb pictures can be a bit cheesy, but reading my way through the history and so forth is really interesting. Maybe you guys already know a lot of the stuff in there, but it's largely been news to me.
Just one of the really interesting tidbits I appreciated: I was under the impression that the name "Royal Oak" and the shape of the bezel were inspired by the cannons on an old English warship called the Royal Oak. From what I read in the book, the name didn't appear to be directly tied to the ship(s), and while I'm not sure about where the shape of the bezel comes from, the book indicated that the old glass Scuba helmets were the inspiration for the look (particularly the bolts). Genta's mind went in this direction for the style of the watch because he thought that Italy's request for the first premium all-purpose steel watch meant that they wanted a watch that achieves a new higher standard of water-resistance. The book also claims that Genta drafted the original drawing of RO over the course of 1 night and he produced/shared only 1 drawing... This was at a time when new designs (let alone totally ground-breaking revolutions) typically required that hundreds of drawings be assessed... |
