Consolidating to 1

OK, so over the last few months I have flipped more watches than I care to admit. And I see nothing to stop me from continuing on with this trend that I enjoy, but ultimately lose a lot of money on.

I do see this as a hobby, and hobbies cost money. I turned my other hobby into a business, so that is no longer fun. So I can justify the loss of funds through the fact that all hobbies cost money.

That said, I have always really just been looking for the one perfect everyday watch. I have searched high and low. I even convinced myself that I needed many to change up when I got bored with one (this might actually be true).

Owning nearly the entire line of new Rolex's I can say that they are all awesome watches. There is truly something for everyone.

While thinking about halting my habit for a bit, I was trying to determine exactly which watch was the best fit for my everyday piece. A watch that fit every avenue of my life. Work, sport, leisure etc....

So.....I sold them all to the legend, DavidSW, and purchased from him, the watch that I hope will at least hold me for a decent while. I figure the watch that fits just about every bill is the GMT IIC. I always regretted flipping it the first time and I am hoping that this watch and a little bit of self control will help me to stop the bleeding, enjoy this everyday wonder, and just be at peace with my love for watches.

I will continue my learning and my appreciation for this fine brand, but it is time to lay low. Wish me luck (or make fun of me, either one is applicable).

Good luck and excellent choice for the watch. I'd like to get a GMTIIc someday but for now I'll stick with my Sub (and switch to my speedy once in a while).

Is there a 12 step program for this addiction? But seriously, the GMT Master in any of it's varieties is really the one watch that does everything well, and a great choice.

You are too old for the TT Bluesy now. You missed the 6 month window.

Well done Sir.

I too regretted selling my GMT-C, but it went to a good friend so I'm OK now ;)

I'd add the GlideLock clasp from the Sub and I too could find the GMT-C acceptable for 1-watch duty.

Best,

Hoppy

Hi Seth,
I have been an avid collector and flipper since 2006 starting with breitlings and moving to rolex. In the past years I've owned and sold atleast 15 high end watches.
I decided I would distance myself a bit to get things into perspective, definitly a good idea..I have come to the conclusion that I would rather have one really special watch then the four that I now have. While it will not be easy letting go of a few prized watches, I know the one watch which I have decided to keep, the gmtii c, possess all of the qualitys which make rolex so awsome..I am with you mate...

Good luck Seth. I believe if someone can afford to flip and this wont negatively affect his obligations towards other stuff like his dependents or financial onligations then why not!

Seth,

You need to update your signature since every single watch on the list is now gone! Good luck with the GMTIIC.....wish I can be disciplined enough to do the one watch only.

Yes - unless you specifically need a dress watch, I think that either the GMT II C (if you want something smaller & dressier) or Exp II 42 mm (larger and more rugged) is the only Rolex you need

I've written identical posts, nearly, on several occasions. I tried the one watch approach a few times and still wish I could do it. Not possible for us watch crazy guys. I settled on two and that has been a pretty good, and less costly balance.

I think that is a spectacular idea as I was debating brushing the PCL's anyway. This way I can keep both bracelets and go a tad dressier if need be.

Truth is guys, this is probably my 4th attempt at this....

I never last more than a few weeks.

But, I really would like to be able to pull this off. Even if I give myself a year and then buy a new watch, I would be very satisfied with my efforts.

It does not adversely effect me financially, but I did a quick tally and I have spent (not including the entertainment value) a crazy sum of loot going back and forth between watches.

Anyway, I do appreciate the encouragement and even the tales of similar unsuccessful attempts. I suppose it is easier knowing that there some other nuts out there such as myself.

I will keep you all updated.

Seth, do you really believe you can live with just one timepiece or is it one Rolex timepiece and a smattering of others? Aye!

I think you made a wise choice.

The following is my opinion.

The second best would be a Sub.

After that would be an DJ, OP, AK, Date, etc.

Good for you Seth, I hope it works for you.

I have flipped dozens of great watches from Rolex, Panerai, IWC's, Breitling, Omega's and even a Sinn. Right now I only have my new 42mm Explorer II and I have never been happier. I was always a 2-3 and sometimes a 4 watch guy. I can say now that unless you love the watch, I mean really love the watch, why keep it around.

I don't even have the itch for another watch, all I want to wear is my 42mm Explorer II. It is that perfect of a watch, I can't say enough good things about it. Probably the highest compliment I can give the new Explorer II's is that it just might solve my flipping habit, which is a crazy thought.

A month or so ago I sold my Sub, a IWC and a Omega AT. With the funds from the sales I purchased the Explorer II and took my wife to San Francisco, we just got back yesterday, and at the end of the month we are taking the kids for our annual week long trip to Disneyland and the beach.

I hope you find the same contentment as I have found, because it is a happier life.

Best of luck Seth, enjoy your new GMT.
