I think that the majority of Rolex owners want what Rolex has to offer in a watch and part of that package is a certain status appeal.
Hans Wilsdorf himself bristled at the idea that a Rolex would be considered a status symbol. It was his intention to make a watch that anyone who set himself such a goal could afford and indeed, such is still the case today, even when we moan and groan over the latest price increase. Wilsdorf want his watches to be symbols of achievement and thus the tagline, "A crown for every achievement." Yes, there are some who think that a Rolex is a sign of status or even that a Rolex will impart a higher status to them, but I think that these individuals are in the minority. If you want a status symbol to wear on your wrist, I think we all know the names to buy.
