Something you don't see every day

My fiance is temporarily doing a work assignment in LaCrosse, Wi (we usually live in the Madison area.), and so I'm here visiting on my day off and decide to bum about town. As I always do when in a new town, I look up stores that have pre-owned watches and happen on an estate sale store. I go in and it's your classic estate stale store, shelves and tables full of random stuff etc. I ask the guy running the place about watches and he takes me back to a surprisingly well stocked display case with a few vintage oysters and oyster dates, some lecoultre's, early chronoswiss and movado chronographs, but the real shocker is the beauty attached. 1950's, pre daytona day date chronograph. Dial is refinished, though faithful to the original. He's asking 85k, or would like to purchase an original dial for up to 20k if anyone has one on hand :). This is way out of my price range, but if anyone is in the market, I would be happy to pass on your phone number to him The best part though, is how it came into his hands. He was on a road trip through the dakota's, stopped at and antique shop and bought it for FIVE DOLLARS in a bag (literally a bag) that the owner was selling for parts cause the weren't running. WOW. Why don't those kinds of things happen to me?

$85k is not the correct price for that bad boy with a repainted dial... $5 really?

He said he had turned down more than one offer for 35k, and he knew that I was not playing anywhere near that level, so he wasn't trying to make the hard sell. This isn't the kind of watch I have ever been in the market for (sadly) so I couldn't say what a reasonable price is. He told me that he came up with that number because the same watch with original dial had recently sold at auction for 180k, and he essentially halved that price cause you pay a lot of fees at auction obviously (buyer and seller) and because of the redial.

The best part of the $5 story is that wasn't the only thing in the bag. He said he got a first release Hamilton Ventura that just needed a battery and a 1940s Cartier men's Tank that just needed to be wound!

Wow thats pretty wild. I guess anything is possible if the person doesn't know the value. I am suprised though it saying Rolex that the person wouldn't recognize it as something of value... but who knows.

Fascinating piece even with the refinished dial.

The Rolex crown really looks misplaced on the dial.

I couldn't get a pic closer with decent focus with my phone camera. The crown on the dial may be a bit off. I didn't scrutinize the dial that closely since he said it was a redial right off the bat. For a very brief moment, I thought that this was going to be my amazing deal of a lifetime. Like people who find Renoir's hidden behind crappy paintings at garage sales. When I asked him the price and he said 85, I thought for a split second he was going to say 85 hundred. I was developing this whole plan to fake haggle to avoid raising suspicions. Suffice it to say in my mind's eye, I was going to play the whole thing VERY slick. Then he said thosand and alas it wasn't meant to be.

With that luck tell him to pick out some lotto numbers for you. You will surly win!

It is a cool Rolex, but not 85k cool, in my opinion.

This 6263 that was grabbed for $5 is often referred to as the Jean-Claude Killy Rolex, two have traded private hands recently that I am very aware of and from research one was sold at Antiquorum in 2011 for roughly $157k. Jon (legacytime) who sells here actually had an original one posted here for $85k. The simple fact that the dial your guy has is repainted will drive the price down by at least $20-$25k (this is not even factoring if the guts are all original)... Nonetheless a great find!!! If you scored it for $8,500 that would have been the deal of the century... I could be wrong, however, there are some font and hand differences on the model you have shown us... Still nice

I am actually happy for the gent who was able to score that in a grab bag for $5, I guess these things actually happen. I don't discuss vintage as much on this forum, however, I am intune with the prices and what this will command... See my response above ;-)

Until he sells it for $85k or whatever amount, it's still worth $5...

If all checks out this is a premier vintage reference... This would be snatched up at a Sotheby's auction in seconds...

Whatever it's worth, whether 185k, 85k or 8.5k, when it was acquired for $5, it's a superb return whatever way you look at it!
