Yes its on the on all Rolex movements the cal number is marked, plus on the base plate movement serial. But only Rolex knows what they mean as there is no information about this.

plus, I believe (and anybody feel free to correct me here) that the movement serial # is not the same as the one that is etched on the case or rehaut

Thanks for information, can the serial number be seen just by opening the caseback?

Just cannot see any point in opening a case to see a movement serial as its just numbers and yes it can be seen.

Good info Peter.

I think its safe to assume Rolex documents which movement went into which watch serial for future reference.

yes, it can be seen. but the information is of little use outside Rolex build data, as Peter mentioned.

It is located in the top of this picture of one of my 3135 movements

That's interesting. I always assumed it was the opposite. My Omega Speedmaster Professional has a display back and the serial # on the movement matches the serial # on the case.

Here's the Cal. 3131 of my G66xxxx series Sub 14060M.... in the lower right corner of the pic, you can see part of the movement serial number:

Yes the movement serial would be documented with Rolex and at the COSC if movement was tested. They are then returned and stored at Rolex factory in the case of say the cal 3135 its possible thousands are stored at a time. Then they are matched to a serial case again its possible thousands are just stored and waiting to make a complete watch. So in one case the movement could be older or newer made, this is why this serial nonsense we get today don't always mean a newer watch. Its just perceived newer by some Internet code thats mainly based on pure supposition, but many think today these codes are the holy grail.
