Rolex Explorer II Trade

Hello Everyone, I am fairly new to this forum but I am in desperate need of help. I have a trade that I am seriously considering and just wanted to get some opinions. I have an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean XL 45mm version and a Girard Perregaux 1945 Vintage Ref. 2583 that I am thinking about trading for a Rolex Explorer II (White Dial) 2001 Model. I love the Omega but it is just a little too large for my wrists. The 42mm fits perfectly and the GP is a beautiful watch but the resale is horrible; however, I am a little hesitant on giving up the GP just because of the movement; the brands history and the fact that in the "watch world" it is a highly respected brand. Value wise, it seems to be a pretty even trade. The seller is selling the Explorer for about $4000 and he values the Omega at about $2500 and the GP at $1500. Please let me know your thoughts.

I have the same model Exp II (1999 A serial white dial). It is a great watch in every way, one of my favorites and I don't think you would be disappointed. There are many, many posts here on TRF regarding the Explorer II. I would suggest using the search function - you will find more info (& great pics) than you will have time to read.

Personally, I would go for the Exp II if the watch is in good shape with box, papers, etc... The $4K value seems in the window for what an Exp II from that time frame would sell for here on TRF.

I am not too familiar with the trade value on your Omega & GP. However, the Rolex sport models do tend to hold their value far better than just about any brand including Omega. Plus the Exp II 16570 is now a discontinued model. I used to own a GP but sold it to fund an IWC which I later sold to fund a Rolex GMT II 16710. The GMT is here to stay and I have never really missed the GP.

There are many others here on TRF that can likely weigh in.

I know nothing about the GP, so my advice may be worthless. If the Rolex is in good conditiin and the others arent sentimental, I say go for it.

For me, the ExpII is a great choice. I bought one of the black face versions for each of two of my sons. I´m always impressed with the ünder-the-radar look and toughness. I´d trade the Omega in a minute, but I´m not so sure about the value of $2,500. As to the GP, it would make a great dress model to go with your ExpII. $1,500 seems a bit low. What did you pay for it?

Well, I got a heck of a deal on the GP. I paid $1,300 without boxes and papers. For some reason or another the GP's, well at least that model, is not in high demand at all and as a result suffer from very low resale values.

The question is, how do you value these watches? Have you done your homework and searched this and other forums for comp sales? If I were you, I'd do that first before entering into a deal.

If yours is a 2908, then fairly good trade value considering he wants avg. retail on a good pre-owned Expl.II A serial or better. Keep the GP and make up the delta in cash, or trade it, I can't really say much about it. DavidSW has one for sale on TRF for $3900-ish perhaps compare yours to his?

But if yours is a 2918, then that's a low-ball trade offer - I'd just walk away from the deal.
