1966 5513 Meters First - A little Help Please on My First Rolex

Hi All,

Long time viewer of this forum and first time poster. Its a fantastic resource and I look forward to contributing where I can.

To cut a long story short, I'm ready to purchase my first Rolex and I've found something that for me, ticks all the boxes. This will be an expensive purchase for me personally, so part of doing my homework is to ask those more knowledgable then myself to provide some santity checking. This will be an international purchase and I potentially wont have the ability to view the watch in the flesh before hand.

The description and photos below are from the seller - I would love your assessment of the watch and please feel free to post your comments here of via private message if you feel more comfortable.

I'm not looking for a bargain but I am looking to pay fair market value so any PM's regarding what this what would be worth would be appreciated. Personally I'm more then happy with his asking price as an amount but its key for me to know that the watch is worth the money.

Look forward to your input and thank you in advance!

From the seller:

My Rolex Sub model 5513.
Dated 1966 serial number 1.58XXXX
Metres first dial
Original dial and hands nicely matching
Tropic #19 acrylic dome
Bracelet is a 7206 rivet with 80 end pieces serviced by Michael Young. Clasp marked 2 68 full 12 links.
Case is in generally good shape with nice fat and bevelled lugs
Time keeping is excellent.

I am not the expert (they are always a little bit slower) but you need to post some extra pics for the info you want . . .

She looks great from what I can tell

Maybe add the asking price . . . and the seller . .

Welcome to the Forum!

I am familiar with the listing for this watch but I am not familiar with the seller. Hopefully you have done this homework already.

I would ask for more pictures than what you have listed here and is available on the other site.

The hands are referred as nicely matching, thus not original to this piece.

I do agree that it is a great looking time piece!!!

Good luck!

Hi Guys,

Thank you for the replies! Much appreciated.

The asking price ~7k USD.

The seller has replied that the watch has the original dial and hands, however I personally know no way to verify that (other then looking for inconsistancies in the patina).

These are all of the images I have.

Regarding the seller, I've asked for references and potentially may be able to purchase the watch in person if I end up heading to Europe in December.

Hi All,

Some more info from the second last person to own this watch:

The non-faded FAT FONT inlay is of a later period (I've been told). Together with the matching Tritium dot it looks! The bi-directional bezel turns but not very lightly, probably a little bit of greese will do the trick but I like it the way it is now.

The original #19 domed plexi is in excellent condition.

The 93150 bracelet (clasp code AB1) with 580 end-pieces is from a later year but wears very comfortable.

We need more pics but ......

..... from that one simple shot - it certainly looks promising. Sexy dial anyway.

The '666' caseback always make me chuckle too. Not often that Rolex has goofed in the last 80 years or so

Polished case, wrong insert bezel, and seems it hasn't a domed tropic19, triplock instead of twinlock crown... 7k???

hi there,

the watch looks really nice but dome remarks
does it come with the 93150 or the 7206 bracelet ?
the pearl and insert are not original to the watch
dial looks great and hour and minute markers are intact
the hands seem a little different in coulour than the hour markers
triplock crown is no issue because most of the meters first were changed during a service
plexi seems a service model but hard to see in these pictures
the case looks fine to me (crown guards are good and lugs are fat enough to my opinion)
the price is rather high even for european standards... why don't you buy in the us where prices are way lower ?

If they are, it's fractional, and does not mean they are not original. They often differ slightly as the substance is applied to different parts of the watch, ie a solid dial, and non-backed skeletal hands.

Have you done your homework on possible import duties and/or VAT into Australia? I don't know what the local rules are but I wouldn't be surprised if there are fees to be paid, unless a watch is shipped with an artificially low value... just a thought.

The hands don't look original as they have NO corrosion.....when was the last time you guys saw a 60's anything without some corrosion?

The bracelet thing is quite odd too.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for all of the great replies!

Apologies for the delay in posting back, hoped you didn't think I was one of those guys who joins, asks for help and never comes back to contribute.

Even before I saw some of the replies here I declined the offer to buy. The seller sent me some more pictures and in some of them there is some lume missing from the hour plots. The feedback here only reinforces maybe the decision was the right one.

I think I have a lot of learning to do before I'll be safe to buy and to be honest will probably look to purchase from someone known to the forums with a good reputation.

Thanks again everyone.

Danny

I should just point out that the comment wasn't meant to imply the seller was not someone with a good reputation. He may even be a member here I'm not sure.
