New some advice on getting a Submariner.
I would appreciate some advice on getting a Submariner, stainless steel, black dial. I could get a new one (2012) 114060 (with no date) or116610LN (with date). Other than the date, externally, is there any other difference? For resale, do you think one is more desirable than the other? I have a Date Just I got in 1988 (jubilee band, stainless and gold, white face with gold pyramind roman numerals). I like the date on it, but with cell phones now, I am not sure I really need one now.
I could get a previously owned one, from what I have seen the price difference is about $3,000, regardless if it is 8 years old or 15 years old. Do you all agree or am I wrong on that. I could get a vintage. Other than a Redline from 68 or 69, what other ones would you recommend as being very collectible? What about a 6538? Thanks for the advice. |

also somewhat sterile. Vintage feels charming, warm, historic, but lighter and flimsier. Two very different things - you probably shouldn't choose between the two based on what people tell you on a forum. Instead, you might want to try and have a look at the watches IRL to get an idea. Having said that, if you don't already know the answer to the question, you should probably go modern. If you're a vintage guy, you probably already know it :) |

I had a U serial 16610 from 1998, bought it preowned in 2008, I loved it, I traded it in June on a new DSSD, but while I was there I compared it to the new SubC and the new one is much nicer, if I had to get a Sub it would be the new SubC

Trust me. If you plan on wearing it frequently you want the new SubC. If your going to put it away for something to collect/wear once in a while go older before prices keep climbing. Take it from someone with both. The new SubC is amazing whether its the 114060 or 116610.

I really appreciate everyone's insights. They have definitely jump started my decision process. I suspect I will get a new one with date.
Thanks! |

I bought the 116610LN. I've tried on the 16610, but I'm into buying things new...whether it's a car, clothes, watch, etc.
So I settled with the 116610 and I'm very happy with it! |

Buy what you like and can afford. Rolex typically makes incremental changes/improvements to their watches, so while I prefer all the improvements that I can afford, doing without one or two of the latest doesn't matter much. IMO, there have been no upgrades over the years that have made me rush to replace my Rolex. However, I do appreciate the quickset movements and sapphire crystals.
You can buy a great used Sub that has decades of life left in it. My experience is that the 14060 tends to sell on the used market for about $500 less than a comparable Sub-date. Keep in mind that "heavy" is not a sign of quality in watchmaking. In many cases, it isn't even a sign of toughness. |
