6. Lifetime ambition to get a Sub since watching early Bond films.

I would say part of it is the fantastic gold alloys they use, it certainly swayed me when picking this one

Got mine in 1965 during the height of the James Bond craze. Hell, if it was good enough for Bond then it was good enough for me.

For me, I buy a Rolex to mark an occasion in life, whatever it may represent to me on various levels of importance. When I was young, I always remember my father and grandfather wearing their Rolex's and certain ones would come out on certain occasions. Sort of a family tradition.

Since I am new here, I do not have the ability to start a poll, but was curious about the motivation of being a Rolex owner/wearer.

So here is a crude poll; Did you buy your Rolex for:

1. Status symbol/"I earned it"
2. Fit and function
3. Family tradition
4. Looks
5. Had to have one
6. Other
Sorry I'm late to this, but I would say many of the same reasons one might purchase a Chris Craft.

Mine would be quality, heritage, legend, and mystique. I think all apply equally to both.

2 and 3

2. Fit and function: EXP II 42 -- finally made one that fit my size. All others looked too small on my wrists. I actually use the GMT function, but didn't want a GMT II.

3. Family tradition: Everyone in my family has at least one one. Grandfather, Dad, Mother, Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Brother-in-Law, Father-in-Law -- which is one of the reasons I didn't want/buy a Rolex for the longest time. I finally broke down and bought one this year.

I "earned it" long before I bought my first Rolex.

He's an attorney. He thinks everything he says is gold. Been my friend for quite sometime. I have to like him the way he is sometimes.

Because I wanted at least one thing that (in my view at least) was the best of its kind.

I see it as the Porsche of watches - not the most expensive or the fanciest, or the best performing - just the best combination of style and function, and just enough exclusivity.

A watch sits on your wrist all day; you look at it often; it should be the best you can afford.

Not being wealthy enough for a collection, I need a single classic looking watch that can go with me where I go. It needs to be robust and it needs longevity, literally and stylistically. And it must be waterproof.

Then there are the brand related reasons, authenticity, tradition, reputation and image.

Nothing ticks all those boxes like a white dialed SS Datejust, which incidentally I don't own. I got the Air-King-Date because I like a smooth bezel and the shop went into only had fluted bezel Datejusts.

24 years later I'm happy with my choice.

Because I need a reliable watch that can withstand something not a jewelry.

Quality first and paramount. The staus of the brand(history) second. I haven't "honestly" met one person who didn't truly, miniscule or not, that didn't somewhat purchase a Rolex because of its staus.

I bought a Rolex Watch as a gift for myself for achieving something. And it's also for a long term usage.

I could say for a special occasion and since I turned 25 just a few days later and had just got my yearly bonus... I guess that'd make some sense...

Or I could say it was because of the family, many members of which wear Rolexes and that'd make sense as well...

But to be honest, it really just was because I wanted it.

When I buy something I look at value and not the $$ of a item . I picked up my watch for around 3-4k less then anywhere on the net or advertised . If I have to wholesale the watch I still will make 1-2 k .. What I have learned is to look at the value of something and not $$ . Most people look at the $$ not value, not me :)

Compared to most brands, Rolex is usually the "safest" option based on design, resale. For me personally, I like the style. Aesthetic balance and all that. You can see this balanced design approach when you look at their monochrome watches with all silver dials like the YM.

Not for investment, not to celebrate an event, not as a reward. I liked the brand, the watch was for sale, I had the money, and I wanted it. Same-o, same-o for the few that followed. They have been great experiences.
