I Love It When An AD Says......

In the spirit of the holidays I thought this might be intersting. Feel free to complete the sentence and give an example.

My experience was on small business Saturday. I was visiting my father in NC and stopped into a small AD who had a nice YG DD sitting all by its lonesome in the case. I've been toying with the idea for a while so I asked to take a look. Problem was this particular model had no rehaut engraving and did have the green hologram sticker. Me thinks that puts it somewhere prior to the Z series circa 2006 or so. Of course they wanted 2012 prices but were willing to offer 18% off. When I asked about the age the response:

"We might have had it in the company for a bit but we just got it recently and it is brand new."

Translation - We're giving you a line of crapola and hopefully you won't know the least bit a difference.

Needless to say I passed and didn't let on to what I knew. OK your turn.

My fravorite is "it will grow on you" Do you really think I'm going to drop 10k plus on a watch that has to "grow on me"

You don't know that.

I'd much rather have a warranteed, discounted, NOS Day-Date with a clean rehaut than one of the new ones plastered in Rolex logos.

My take is a bit different. I don't think the AD has necessarily said anything that is untruthful though they might not have been as forthcoming as they could have been. The watch may have indeed been at another outlet of the same AD and may have only arrived at this shop recently and it does sound like a previously unsold watch so it is "brand new".

There was a similar thread not so long ago with a very similar situation, the main difference was that (as far as I know given the information that was written in the first post) the salesperson offered a discount only after the potential buyer called him out on the age.

As for myself, I couldn't care less if a 6, 10 or even 12 years old (those specific years are just random examples, of course), if it's straight from an AD it's still new in my book. In fact, as stated above, I'd much rather have a good discount on a watch that has a few years than having to pay full price on a model just because "Rolex just sent it from its factory" and I think it's great that she person offered you 18% off of it.

I agree in theory with the age thing and as for the logo, I'm relatively neutral. My main issue if you will is given the age (depending on serial) it seems illogical to pay substantially more than retail when it was delivered. The AD already paid for it it would seem so not like they were losing $$ on the deal. Also new technology has been added to the movement since then. No big deal my local small AD will order a new DD if I want for the same % off. I was just thinking if they wanted to do some sort of offer I can't refuse type of thing.

I think you passed up a good deal and you might have done better with some negotiating.

However, to each his own.

If a Rolex had been sat in some AD's window for five years, surely it would need servicing? Would the AD be responsible for making sure the watch is in "brand new" condition in respect to the lubricants before selling or would any problems be covered by the two year warranty?

If he sold all his stock at the "old" prices, he AD has no way to purchase new stock if the wholesale prices are also hiked by Rolex.
A middle ground is usually negotiated.

If you buy it TODAY you can get 18% off. I can't guarantee that discount later.

That was the old price. The market price for new Day-Dates has gone up, and Rolex will charge them more, too.

If it was a NOS double-red Sea-Dweller, should they sell that for $500?

A 5-year-old unused Day-Date might be a little less valuable than a 1-year-old unused one to somebody, but that seems more than covered by the 18% discount.

I don't think the AD will verify if it needs service. If anything goes wrong Rolex will cover the repairs under warranty. To Rolex a watch is brand new until sold, regardless of production age.

To OP, if you don't mind not having the engraved rehaut and any minor updates done to the movement, I would negotiate a 30% discount and go with it. They should be very motivated to move it!
