The Begining
Passed by RSC today and saw this photo, I wonder if he ever expected how successful Rolex would become.
I also saw this in the workshop as I bought a NOS link for my 16520. So I guess Nato bands are okay? :p |

By 1959 the icons had already been established. I'm sure he knew Rolex was firmly anchored .

When even Thierry Stern wants to see how it's done, it says something. Op, is this RSC in Kuwait. |

It is my understanding that Rolex, while long being a symbol of excellence and innovation in the craft, really took off in the Eighties as the watch of the yuppies, symbolizing, I would think to Hans Wilsdorf's dismay, ostentation and conspicuous consumption.
Of course, no one here ever bought a Rolex for those reasons and while Mr. Wilsdorf might have been a little put off by those values, he undoubtedly would have reveled in the success of his company, especially considering that the surge of Rolex popularity occurred at a time when Japanese quartz watches were killing off the Swiss watch industry. I do think that it was the Rolex adherence to slow evolutionary change that played a very big part in the continued success of Rolex, while other watch companies foundered.
