my dad gave me an old seiko watch is it worth repairing?

it works but the glass is scratched, and the band is gone.

and its an older model, he said he bought it awhile ago....my mom said she bought it in japan in the 70's for him, and he passed it down to me

anyways it says seiko 17 jewels on the face. and it is one of those "kinetic" watches.

ill post a pic. ive searched around and i saw that the watches to have are the seiko 5 .....i don't think this is one so is this one even worth my time?

i really don't know anything about watches im just a 19 year old kid who hot rods cars LOL

Hi, C.S.

the Seiko you've posted is another old watch.

Seiko 5 referss to:

1. Automatic
2. Water resistant
3. Shock proof
4. Date display
5. Date display

Hence, Seiko 5. Several current models are available for around $75.

Hi C.S.

With a watch like your father's Seiko it's not really a case of if it's worth it to repair/overhaul but what is the watch worth to you from a sentimental point of view.
I've recently had my grandfather's Unicorn Amphibian restored, my '70's Seiko diver restored and I've just put in my very first watch (a small swiss manual with ST96 movement) for overhaul.
They all reside proudly in my watch box next to my Omega, Rolex and others.
They all cost more that they were worth to repair but I am glad I repaired them as they have history.
Hope this helps.

I think it would only be worth repairing if it were special to you because it was a gift from your Dad. If that's the case you can't really put a price on that. Like Al said, you can find those new for around $75.00. Good luck with your decision.

Civic,

You have a nice Seiko automatic watch.

Your piece was made in May, 1982 and has a workhorse ref. # 6309 movement..

This movement was used in Seiko dive watches for years and is considered rugged and reliable, and beats at 21,600 BPH making it a medium fast caliber. It is non-hacking, non windable, but it does have quickset day/date features.

This watch has all the features of the Seiko 5 branded watches....The Seiko 5 branding is a marketing effort and you can say you have the father of those watches.

Repair is up to you....Seiko is one of the best respected names in watches and eary non-quartz models are collectible.

You can spend a bunch and send it to an authorized Seiko Service Center, or you can find a good watchmaker to give it a good Clean, Oil and Adjust service and it will last for another 25 years. The crystal can easily be replaced or possibly polished up.

Get a nice Hirsch Traveler band and a deployant clasp and you will have a stunner and a great low-budget addition to any watch collectors watchbox.

Here is my 1970's 7009, which would be the grandfather of your 6309.

That`s a good and reliable watch, and when you repair it and put on leather strap it will be a stunner. So,my advice is to repar it!It will not be too expensive and you`ll have a watch to be proud of!
