Losing Time

I bought a new Breitling superOcean in 2008. The watch lost around a minute a day. Was sent back to Breitling and fixed twice, but still loses about a minute a week. Is this normal for a self winding watch? Anyone else have this issue?

A minute a week is too much but no different than what my Submarines is doing. My Sub gains at least a minute a week.

It sounds like a regulating issue. Superoceans are usually good timekeepers but if you are not happy, any watchmaker can regulate it.

To be within chronometer specs, the watch would have to stay within plus 4 minus 6 per day. Based on that, anything more than about 45 seconds a week is a bit much. Keep in mind that losing or gaining time does not signal a bad watch, as long as the variance is consistent from day to day.

Another think to keep in mind is that how the watch is stored makes an impact as well. Crown down, watch on side, tends to lose time. Crown up on its side tends to lose even more time. Dial up, gains time. The best accuracy is always achieved if the watch is worn 24/7 or if it is on a winder.

Do you store it next to a speaker? If you set it next to an iPhone speaker box or something like that, the proximity to the magnets in the speaker COULD have a tiny influence on accuracy as well.

Thanks for the reply. I do take off the watch at night and rest it on the side (crown side up). I'll try placing it flat, or wearing it at night. I do not keep the watch near a speaker. Appreciate the help!

Don't wear it all the time if you do not want to but certainly try the face up storage over night to see if that helps.

Great suggestion. With the little bit that the watch is off, this should regulate the watch to what it should running.

Exactly. One minute a week is not horrible by any means. My Submariner is worse than that.

Awesome!!

Gravity... sometimes work for you... sometimes works against you! It's all decided by how you lay your watch.
