Advice on which year submariner to buy

Hi All
I'd like to buy a Submariner for my husband's xmas present. After tons of research (thanks to all the help on here), I've got it down to three very similar quality watches at very similar prices - only the year of manufacture is different.

One is 1997, one is 1998 and one is 2000/1

With all else being similar (they all have boxes and original paperwork), which one would you recommend I go for?

Thanks in advance

With all things being equal I would go with the newer of the three.

Welcome to the Forum!

Condition, service history, and price should be taken into consideration as well.

Well depending if the submariner has a date it will be a 16610 which was first introduced in 1988 with the cal 3135 movement. Now this model has remained basically unchanged over the years right up till 2010.So its possible the 1997/8 models would have tritium lume so glow now will be almost gone. Now the 2000/1 would be luminover type lume that does not lose its glow plus expect that model would have a SEL solid end link bracelet a far better design. Now if its a non date sub ref 14060 the movement would be the cal 3000.Now if its a 2000/1 model it will most probably be the 14060M the M stands for modified and will have the cal 3130 movement but all good watches. If no service history it would be prudent to budget soon for a full service around £400 then watch will be almost like new with a full two year warranty.

Newest one, provided that everything (service history, condition, complete accessories included, etc) checks out.

As Padi mentioned, depends on if it's the Sub, or the Sub Date you're talking about..

The Sub didn't have any real changes at all between those years except for the tritium vs Luminova lume, so get the one in the best condition for the price.

If it's the Sub Date, there are some advantages to the 2001 that are entirely about the bracelet.. If it has the SEL 93250 bracelet, it is the better choice if all else is equal. If not, again, get the best condition for the price as these years are all the same but the lume.

I vote for newer as well. I'm sure he would like it more if the lume glows at night.

Typically the newer one, but, make sure that also includes the box, papers, outer box, etc. Those have value if the watch is ever sold or traded.

new one for every day use LN or LV (LV is really nice) and 5513 or 12 because of the history
