Accuracy of A New Rolex

Okay, here we go...

I have noticed a pattern with each of my five Rolex watches I've acquired over the past year.
Every watch (when new) was running 2 seconds fast per day, regardless of orientation when on my dresser at night.

I know this is well within COSC specs and we should not judge accuracy on a new mechanical watch until it's been running for a few months.

Has anyone else experienced the same gain rate as me with their new Rolex? What have you observed after two or three months have passed? Has your watch remained at this rate or changed in accuracy?

Good point. I've been lucky in that most of my new Rollies have been pretty spot-on from day one.

My Bluesy was a wee bit slow at first, but after about 8 weeks, picked up and is now very accurate.

If I place it crown UP at night on the dresser, it gains.....crown DOWN and it loses.

My YM Platty is just the opposite - crown UP and it loses....crown DOWN and it actually gains - something very rare.

Remember, most Rolex watches would LOSE time in the crown DOWN position.

My GMT IIc is about 4 sec. slow per day, but with dial down position, seems to lose 2-3 sec./day. I am still waiting for it to settle down and hopefully gain 1-2 sec./day eventually.

The only Rolex I had that was right on from the start and for months later was a "D" series Black two tone Sub. Largest gain was two seconds in a week, with bezel up at night. Amazing accuracy for a mechanical watch! Like a fool, I traded this out and have been kicking myself in the butt ever since. It was a costly lesson because I just acquired a new M series TT (black) Sub and plan to keep this one! My Z Sea Dweller has gained one second per day no matter what orientation. I am very happy with this as well.

Thanks, Mike. Like I said, don't worry too much about any mechanical watch being absolutely spot-on like a good quality quartz - it will hardly ever happen.

These Rollies eventually have a habit of "settling in". Just give them some time (pun intended) and the watch will be purring away like a well-tuned Ferrari.

Both of my GMT ceramics (two tone and stainless), lost four seconds a day from new. It seems you are having the same experience as me. After two months, I had them regulated to at least be on the plus side...I really don't know why these watches with the "improved" movement both lost time.....Beautiful watches though!

after 8 and 1/2 years my SD runs +1 , +1.5 sec fast per day. It has never been serviced and I am afraid if I send it in it won't be the same when it comes back. no other auto watch I own has even been close to its accuracy. I wear my watches 24/7. My SD was worn 6 of the 81/2 yrs exclusively. I bought a couple of other brands for variety but the SD still gets the bulk of wrist time.

what clock do you guys use to set against? Is there an atomic clock on the internet that shows seconds?

I used my cell phone but, that doesn't show seconds - so unless you count the difference?

I have been using the Official U.S. Time site but the Accurist site looks great too. I have saved it to my favorites....
