Icon10 Hello and Merry Christmas from new member

Hi All,

After lurking (and researching) for a few months I thought it was time to participate. A great number of real characters here, it seems!

Well, my Rolex research has revealed a level of indicisiveness that I fear means I'm on the edge of a very slippery slope. Can't decide on a first Rolex, but the next two or three are already obvious ...

I'd appreciate any advice from Melbourne residents as to trustworthy and fair ADs, as well as similar sources for used. Currently, I'm leaning towards 14060M and/or 16600.

Rolex seems an obvious progression from my other interests in all things mechanical - Leica cameras, classic sports cars (Porsche 356) - I guess this is nothing new around here.

Anyway, the festive season is a welcome distraction from my Rolex musings (also gives me more time to hang out here ...)

Cheers,

Jay

Hi Jay, welcome aboard!

I'm about as far away from OZ as you can get, so can't help you with Melbourne AD's, but you're on the right track for a first Rolex purchase with either the SeaDewller or Sub ND. Both significant, stand the test of time, watches.

Be sure to post pix when you decide and take the plunge (with a waterproof Rolex, of course )

Cheers Al

Did my first year of school in Toronto (1976) - used to ski to school. A Rolex would have been handy then

No white stuff of the frozen variety in OZ, but the recent rain definitely warrants a watch waterproof to 1.2km ....

Jay

PS What does mean?

Btw, hang in here and no doubt some of our Australian members will be around to address your Melbourne questions.

Welcome J the non-date Sub and the SD are both good first choice options, so too is the GMTIIC.
I would recommend LK Jewellery in the Crown Casino complex. They seem like very genuine people in my experience. Monards in Melbourne are good too, but they are no longer an authorised dealer, yet they do offer good prices on genuine 'new' Rolex.
Good Luck

Happy Holidays to all, my advice for a first Rolex is to try a vintage 1601 or 16014 Rolex Datejust. The Sub and SD are excellent progression in the Rolex family of characters.

You should be able to pick up a beautiful, like new, SS/Plat YM from NZ shortly! Welcome!

Thanks all for the welcome!

Am I correct in assuming that the Rolex international warranty is only available if buying from an AD? IF so, this would suggest that even buying new from a previously authorised dealer (such as Mondards) does not retain the warranty.

Steve, the next Rolex after a sub/SD would be a GMT II. I like to plan ahead ....

Regards,

J

Jay: I'm not expert in this area, but that's my understanding: Rolex two year warranty only applies if: 1) you are the buyer (in short, non-transferable) and 2) you bought from an AD, and is good world-wide for 2 years from date of purchase. Not sure all what it covers, but I'm sure if the watch stops, they'll at least fix that.

Not sure if it covers 'regulating' the watch,i.e., making it run faster or slower so as to be dead-on accurate(or close), and whether that's done by the RSC(rolex service center) or at the AD..guess it depends on how big the AD is....

Good luck!
best, dan

Jay, welcome to TRF. It sounds like you are a very organized person but you are going through what many go through when purchasing their first watch. What type of work do you do? Does it warrant a hefty watch like the SD? My first was a GMT because I decided the GMT function of the watch served the best purpose for my line of work. The only advice I can give is to try them all on and pick out the one that smiles back at you. What ever Rolex you buy, will be a right decision. Good luck on your search and don't forget to post pics when you've pulled the trigger.

I'm a bit in the dark on this issue too. My AD says he has a customer who buys a lot of watches and they leave the paperwork open because they know he's going to trade them and they're worth more with the open paperwork. The paperwork on my new Sub is made out to me but my TT DJ and SS Daytona have no name on them. Don't know what would happen if I took them in to an AD other than mine. As far as regulation, they pulled the back on the DJ and regulated it. There is no charge for that. I'm sure they would do that in or out of the warranty period if you bought it there.
