Know too much about Rolex

This weekend my wife and I went to a pretty large antique fair in Atlanta. I always used to love looking at the assorted Rolexes that you could find at various booths.

After years of reading posts on this forum though, all I could see this time around were the flaws of every watch. Over polished bezel, wrong bracelet, fake dial, stretched bracelet, and so on. Didn't see a single watch that I would add to my collection.

I guess I miss the days when just seeing a Rolex impressed me. Maybe ignorance is truly bliss.

Sorry, just venting.

Scott

It's like a drinking wine before you could truly tell the difference between an ok bottle and an exceptional bottle.

Once you can tell you never want anything less than exceptional.

I felt the same way surfing the net a few days ago and I still consider myself a newbie at this.

It's like driving a sexy sportscar and then having to drive the family minivan.

Sometimes wish didn't know so much

I am glad I know more about Rolex (and other watches) more than any human being should know.....but sometimes we (WIS) over think and over worry about stuff that most people don't.

My wife is a great example....I bought her a Lady DJ about 5 years ago. (She didn't even wear a watch before that)
She just wears it....she skips a day and doesn't worry about the power reserve...she doesn't care if it +/-3 sec per day and want to run to an AD to have it regulated. She wears it to the gym, in the shower sometimes only b/c she forgot to take it off not to test the water resistances. She probably thinks it's a perpetual calendar...b/c she has never set the date ever...On the 1st of the month that doesn't have 31 days prior I set mine and hers. She has worn on vacation without asking if she should leave it at home before she leaves. She doesn't have lume ...but if she didn't she wouldn't care how long it lasted.

...BUT my watch is +2 per day...I am glad I am a WIS :)

Well said.

Forums like this give solid grounding for those wishing to persue their hobby, however we do sometimes get bogged down in the most obscure of things.

Atleast your shows have some good watches. The ones around here do very rarely. It is usually the same dealers with the same stuff and when some do show up the prices are CRAZY.

Its your improved knowledge base, perhaps combined with demand in the pre-owned market. I'll bet the antique show dealers can only find/afford the overworked and abused ones to pass along anymore. JMHO

These 2 points sum up my feelings on the matter.

To me, knowledge is good. It's how to apply the knowledge which is the key.
