Opinions on this 16750
Hoping some experienced collectors could give me their opinions on this 16750. Any opinions, or advice would be appreciated.

IMO - probably not priced well and pictures are insufficient to comment on quality / condition / originality of the watch.

Welcome to the Forum!
Looks like a very nice package. It is difficult to find these beautiful time pieces with all the goodies. Ask about service history, as you may have to take that into account with the price. The bracelet appears to have some stretch but you could send out for repair and/or purchase a sturdier 78360. The case appears good but there aren't a lot of pictures with this ad to display a show the case all around. Ask for more pictures! Who knows, you may be able to bring the seller down a couple hundred bucks... |

He's one of those sellers who insists he's not in a hurry to sell, and challenges me to find a better watch for the price he's asking. Oddly, the more I write about this particular watch, the more I wonder if I should pass on it. Quote:
As I wrote above the seller lowered his price, but is convinced it's a good price now. As for service history, he said it was serviced "last year" but won't say by whom, and he can't provide service documents. Any advice on what to look for when I actually go and see the watch? |

the best part is that he says its value is appreciating 20% annually. that is a great line!
anyway, i would say to avoid anything of value on kijiji. however, it could be a nice set based ont he pics. you need better shots of the watch and case. is this a business or an individual? if its a business, its a bad way to market their products. regardless, if you are a novice buyer, i would recommend meeting at a rolex dealer in toronto and have them look at the watch and remove the back. get a quote for an overhaul and offer them $150 for their time. if it checks out, pay him what he wants... but i would not pay that much for this particular package. 4500 is more like it. |

It's a private seller. I already offered $4500 and he shot that down immediately. He's really convinced this watch is worth his asking price. Maybe I'll take a drive over and have a look, and maybe get some better shots. |

Kind of tough to evaluate using those photos, but to my eyes, it looks overpolished and/or incorrectly polished. Bracelet seems to have quite a bit of stretch also. The box is not the correct one (too new). On the plus side, you are getting a whole extra bracelet as part of the deal.

Should a 1984 production be matte dial?

Interesting point, bluemartinifan. It says OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE, rather than just OYSTER PERPETUAL. As per some vintage catalogues I have, the addition of the word DATE to the dial didn't seem to appear until 1989. I'm assuming a newer service dial.

I'm going to have to present all this info I'm learning about to the seller when I meet him, and see what he thinks. I've got him down to $4600; might be able to move that down some more. |

Private individual trying to sell a watch for a year. Are these the same photos from a year ago? What is the actual condition of the watch now? Not the original dial. Have you tried sourcing a good condition matte dial for a 16750? Very difficult.
4500 maybe with the certificate though I'd say that piece of paper is costing you $400. Wooden boxes were available in 84. I had a 16800 from 1984 that came with the original wooden box.

The watch IS vintage, the dial is correct! The warranty paper is correct, the red hang tag and wood inner box with tan pillow is not correct. It would be nice to see some decent photos of the watch.

I met with the seller this morning, and this watch actually looks better in the pictures than in person. A really rough example.
I walked away from it, because judging from pics I've seen here on TRF, I can find a much better example for the money. Thank you to everyone who provided opinions on this. It's good to know there's a place I can visit to get great advice on vintage pieces. |

By the way--what are the rules regarding asking for opinions about watches in the For Sale section? There are a couple of 16750's I'm looking at there. I don't want to offend the sellers by asking about their watches here. Should I get permission from the sellers first?
