Monumentous Announcement: Rolex and F1

Recently, it was announced that Rolex will be the major event sponsor of the Australian Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix on 14-17 March 2013 to be called the " Melbourne Rolex Formula 1 Grand Prix".

This is a major step forward by Rolex in Formula 1 sponsorship:

The ‘Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix’ is the first race of the 2013 Formula One season and will take place in Melbourne on March 14-17.

This announcement follows Rolex’s Global Partner agreement signed in December 2012 to be the Official Timekeeper and Official Timepiece of Formula One, and demonstrates further Rolex’s commitment to motor racing and global sport.

“We are delighted to be the Title Sponsor of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and it is a superb way for Rolex to start a long partnership with Formula One. As the Official Timekeeper, a partnership we announced before Christmas, we will of course support Formula One at every race but we felt a Title Sponsorship of the first race was a very strong sign of our passion and commitment,” said Gian Riccardo Marini, Chief Executive of Rolex SA.

“We are well aware that the Australian race is one of the most loved Grands Prix and as the first race it is eagerly awaited by a passionate global fan base. For Rolex to be present as Official Timekeeper and Title Sponsor is very exciting for everyone and we are looking forward to a great inaugural Grand Prix. Our passion for performance, precision, excellence and innovation will be clear for all to see.”

Bernie Ecclestone, Chief Executive Officer of the Formula One group, said: “This announcement is super news for Rolex, for Melbourne and for Formula One. Given Rolex was only recently announced as our Official Timekeeper, we are delighted they have chosen to become Title Sponsor of the first race and to begin our global partnership with such an impact.”

Rolex has a long history with sport in Australia supporting the Australian Open Tennis Championship and the legendary Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chairman, Ronald J Walker AC CBE, said: “We are honoured to have a brand like Rolex as our Title Sponsor, this is hugely exciting for all of us here and we cannot wait to welcome them to Melbourne for the first race. Formula One receives a big welcome from Melbourne and Australia and we are very confident Rolex will enjoy their race in Formula One both as Official Timekeeper and as our Title Sponsor.”

As Formula 1 is arguably the pinnacle of sports motor racing, the gravity of this decision is profound in terms of Rolex's involvement in motor racing.

Gentlemen............start your engines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good news, but I doubt there will be any special edition watch. Rolex already sponsor other sporting events, and we have yet to see a 'Wimbledon' edition for example

I expect that we will see some green elements on a production Daytona to mark 50 years, but that will be about it. Of course only Rolex really knows and I could be completely wrong

My guess for a new model name is "Daytona II" or "Sports-Timer"

I'm thinking you could be completely wrong about how you could be completely wrong.

I have the same sentiment about there not being a special edition.

My take is that the event wears Rolex and Rolex doesn't wear the event, if you get what I mean.

Of course, only Rolex really knows....

Nicely put Julian, I think you are spot on. But who knows... perhaps Rolex will surprise us with an 'Albert Park' Daytona this year...

The Daytona is due for a face-lift - might be a good time to do it
