I think for every day use I would go for a ballpoint. I find it will write on more surfaces (such as tape) than a rollerball. I have several rollerballs and if I know I will only be writing on paper I will use one. I think the RB is the writing experience between the BP and the FP

To me, it is nice having a pencil (I can make notes on documents I can later erase) and a ballpoint. I concur with Leo, I do enjoy fountain pens with bottle ink. I have just recently pruchased a MB 147 Traveler and I am learning the joy of cartridges.
