Incoming- matte dial submariner 16800

I couldn't resist another 16800. This one however has a matte dial from 1983. After wearing it one day I am really impressed with it. I picked it up a lunch, then had someone check it out for me. Contrary to my previous posts, the movement is fine, the watch keeps perfect time. The only non-original part is the bezel insert, which is an easy fix...

I traded in my GMT, got some cash in my pocket and this great watch...

Funny, now that I have this I have temporarily lost the crazy obsession for a 1680 white sub. This watch has the matte dial, large white hour markers and a quickset date function under a sapphire crystal...I currently believe it to be my perfect Rolex...

Absolutely gorgeous 16800! As you know I'm a huge fan of your Subs! What's your collection shot looking like? Hope all is well!

thanks Adam...

Hey Thanks, you can see my signature, I only have three watches in rotation right now, One tudor and two 16800 submariners, and a little cash in my pocket after unloading a few of my non rolex watches. I'll take a daylight new collection photo when I get some time.

I've learned to be patient and to buy Rolex submariner watches at dealer prices, so I will save up a little more and wait for the next submariner, perhaps I will finally land a 1680...

Awesome watch, one of my favorite along with the 1680!

Now just replace that cheap bezel insert for a nice NOS 16800 one and you'll be set!

Hey Thanks, here is what I did for the 16800:
I went to the AD, they installed a new bezel insert, all new seals, new crown and crown tube, more seals, etc... The watch keeps 1 sec per day time. Then I put the original boxes away for safekeeping, and put the watch in the safe deposit box at the bank, perhaps I will list the 16800 matte dial watch for sale at some point.

matte dial

were the matte dials original or is it a result of fading?

Yes, the matte dial was an original feature on the 16800, but Rolex did start using the newer white gold dials in the 16800's, 168000's, the 16610's.

Thanks..

Hey Thanks, The 16800 is a stunner, but I traded it for a GMT 1675 Pepsi... I have a trading addiction for which there is no cure.

See the GMT in my avatar photo...
